Wow 13 episodes already in the can? That's a huge amount of work for those not familiar with what is involved. Big props to you Marc, a lot of people only talk about ideas like that - kudos to you for accomplishing it.

What's the story on the song in the opening? Sounds sort of like Isaac Brock or one his bands. I like the show, though as a lyricist I'm more a fan of the 'keep it a bit mysterious' school than of the 'this is what it means' school. The sort of questions I'd like to hear would be, 'what were doing when you wrote X' or 'were there some records you were listening to when you wrote X' or 'did you write X with a pen and paper or on a computer' or 'in X was it lyrics or melody first.' best, john

Just watched last weeks show with Hey Champ and Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers. I know I am a week late, been busy. I really liked Hey Champ there music and there philosophy on music, and the industry. Bump for a great show.

Hi Marc. Just wanted to say thanks for this fantastic show. For me, it's a great mix of low-key and high quality performances and recordings which is unusual these days. |

Love!!!! "Kids These Days". These guys are gonna be HUGE. Easily my favorite band right now and I'm 35. Also check out their Lollapalooza vid that Mark mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Qpo-...eature=related Finally a young band playing all of their own instruments and killing it with the grooviest tracks out there |

I got a real chuckle out of seeing the road signs in the intro. I'm an old Calumet region guy myself, now in Lafayette, IN. I read the whole thread and found your comments on recording drums very interesting. I noticed a great consistency to the sound no matter what kit is being used.

But it's not quite all live, right? There seems to be a bit of post production there. For example, I just saw the Hey Champ episode and the singer sings on a LDC with the drums playing maybe 15ft behind him in the same room. That vocal sounds way too clean to have been cut live.

As for the Hey Champ video, Vocals are certainly 100% live cut with the drums, gtr and synth. why would it matter if its a LDC? i dont get that question.. they played to a few tracks (by their choice)... but other than that it was 100% live. AS far as post -production goes.. Hey Champ.. and the Starside were the only bands that "played with tracks" a couple groups "played with tracks" ...the rest was all recorded live.. How we shot was simple.. we did two takes of the song. shot different angles on both.. Best take was the master video and audio... and we used the other take as filler footage..

I could post a short snip of just vocals if you wanted to hear it... for what i can remember... i used the 47 into my normaphone pre and then into a distressor. believe it or not.. John the drummer is one of the main secrets... he knows how to balance cymbals incredibly.. which is the cause of concern for vocals with drums in a room. Johnathan Marks is a complete pro.. and an amazing friend. The best drummer in Chicago i've heard... i can say with confidence. my room doesnt sound live and is very treated so balance does help it. When mixing... I automated pretty intensely. after every word i ducked 20 db.... and used a bit of expander off the R-comp. Saam (the vocalist) has a very unique voice too... he sings very loud.. mostly all the time out of the gate... so that too helps keep things in order. |

Just fell upon this. Watched every episode. Amazing work on every level. All first class. I was wondering how you got the video footage with so many various angles and shots. Makes sense that you commonly do 2 takes of the songs and shoot different scenes, then edit it together with the best performance audio take. Nicely done. The recorded sound is really, really sweet. Your live tracking and mixing skills are top shelf. Highly impressed. I too am a big fan of the Fatso, especially on OHs. Can you tell a bit more about the Greg Norman pres. I see you use them on "everything". I read up on Greg and his work, but the info on the pres is scarce. Thanks.

The same preamp is in a two channel 1RU box that will be sold from Electrical Audio at some point. There are a couple of differences, but the basic circuit is the same. I haven't designed a 500 series version yet.
