| Gear maniac | flipping phase on guitar tracks
When you track distorted guitars with two tracks, do you flip the phase on one of those tracks to make it wider and have cancellation in the middle of the sound field? I have some tracks where on certain parts, there is buildup in the center and as the player plays, it moves around in the sound field. I was wondering if that was a result of not flipping phase on one of the mics.

I will give you the double micing guitar cab secret if you promise to not tell anyone else. Mic the amp with mic #1 as usual. Plug in mic #2 and flip the phase on that mic. While wearing headphones (and the guitarist not playing but plugged in) move the 2nd mic around the amp until the hiss is as close to completely cancelled as possible. That is going to be your optimum placement for correct phase. Once you find it, flip the phase back to normal and ROCK!!
