Thread Starter | If you could only have one preamp for tracking?
What would be a great choice for a two channel preamp?

Manley TNT.
Has a tube channel and a "no tube" channel (tube no tube)

Michael Wagener told me you'd have to put a gun to his head to get him to use one preamp.

Pacifica or P-1 modules, primarily because if you can only have 2 ch. of the same pre and nothing else - it stacks very very well.

although there are some lovely new pre's I haven't used (A-Designs, Tonelux, Shadow Hills, Buzz), I'd highly recommend an API pre.

Well if a gun we're pointed, GML. Great uncolored sound! Using it over and over and over doesn't build up a charachter.

anything that costs over about $1500 US will be fine. Anything that costs less than that will be probably be fine.

Any preamp that amplifies a mic level signal to a line level signal...so...pretty much anything....wtf is with all this fixation on gear. I mean, I know this is gearslutz, but youd' think that we'd actually have some technique so that we could use ANY and ALL gear and get satisfactory results. Of course, it is nice to work with good stuff like APIs or the endless f*cking stream of Neve stuff...but really....wtf?

| If only one pre were available that makes sense to me. Clean pre, mics for the character. If your pre is seriously coloured (i.e. neve 1073dpa) then you'll never get a transparent sound with any mic but if your pre is clean then you can arguably colour with your mics

Since I'm doing mostly rock, I could (and have!) recorded with TG2's only...
Greetings,
Dirk

Right now I'm only using the GTQ2 and I think it's got a sweet and colorful sound, with a little bit of musical haze, when used on all the tracks.
I'd also like to get an API and a Germanium pre. I think those would sound good on a whole song as well.

| TG fan here - MKII's and TG2s. I do entire mixes with them. Mostly rock as well. But my guitar/singer stuff sounds great as well. As a matter of fact I just did a hip hop track using nothing but and the guys were so stoked I get a cameo in the video The track was done with all live instruments BTW, it turned out killer even in the rough mix stage.
