Q1. Keeping your studio "fresh"

How do you studio owners with no windows in your space keep the place from getting to "funky smelling". I noticed some incense threads, but are there any better ways? Tips please.

Thanks,
Leon

I spray that Fabreeze crap every couple days on all the furniture and the tapestries and I light candles and incense every session. Plus I open the doors whenever possible.

we clean a lot. i've noticed myself kind of OCD'ing about picking up even the smallest little bits of paper and whatnot from the floors and rugs.

Hmm, yeah there seems to be the remnants of an Italian Sub (nothing I ate) in my control room somewhere and I can't seem to find it. Fabreeze may be the right thing, good idea.

The ionic breeze might do the trick but it will cost you! But at least it's silent and can run 24/7.

Thanks for a lot of good ideas

i might go with the essential oil burner, as I am in Japan and the "products" like the air purifier and Dr. stuff might be hard to come by. I think I need to get busy cleaning a bit more intensely. The place I moved into is a bit stuffy already, as a space that has been left for while usually is.

Thanks again, and more suggestions are welcome.

EcoQuest make a great machine for not only eliminating all kinds of odors, but also kills 99.9% of all bacteria and viruses in an area up to 2500 sq feet. Might come in handy with bird flu on the way. They cost about about $700, but well worth it. Thay also make smaller ones that are a little cheaperbut still up there. You can pick them up for less on evilbay.
Because of the ozone/O2 output it also kills mold. Might be good for that mysterious piece of italian sub you smell. They're also good for the equipment. They actually make new oxygen as well. It has a sanitize mode on a timer that I always set for 8 hours before leaving and when you come back everything is sparkling fresh. I've had one in my control room for a while and people always comment how fresh it smells. I saw a demo where they pour pure ammonia on a paper towel and hold it in front of the machine for about 30 seconds or so. Then you smell it and the ammonia is gone 100%. Worth looking into.

I just picture this half a sandwich lying under a console or behind a rack somewhere, gradually growing green mold as it putrifies, and an engineer (who would rip out his racks if he had a ground loop) is walking around the room spraying Febreze thinking that's how he will deal with the problem.

Nothing beats fresh air. If they have fresh air where you live, go to the store and buy some duct hose and a fan with a speed control, and pipe some fresh air into your room from outside. If they don't have fresh air, the next best thing is a fan driven hepa filter thingy, the whole "ion" thing may smell nice, but the hepa filter actually gets particles out of your air

I wouldn't dream of burning incense to GET RID of smell. Incense if like cig smoke - it never leaves! Hate that stuff...my ex. used to burn incense all the time and it made my apt. smell like one of those indian shaman shops. Not offense to indians.

Just Say No to Ionic Air Cleaning

Dump you ionic air cleaners ASAP! They will degrade your health and that of your staff and clients, and MUCH more importantly, they fock up you gear!

Just clean the room every morning. And get someone to clean the carpet (if you have any) every 6 months

Try not to use carpet

Wood floors and area rugs are much less likely to retain odor. If you,ve ever pulled up carpet thats 5 yrs or older you realize what a filthy floor covering it is. Even steam cleaning doesn't really get the stuff in and under the pad, pet stains, spills, fine dust , ect. 20 yr old carpet is enough to make you want a haz-matt suit.

Yeh, those fokkers make ozone.

You know how the rubber around your windshield gets cracked after a few years? That's sun + ozone eating the plasticizer.

Ozone belongs in the ozone. Not so much needed near sea level.

Unless your studio has all pre-plastic gear with bakelite and cel stuff, they should be avoided.

But fresh air is the key. Covering up the odors is just worse.

Like when someone puts on more patchouli instead of showering and laundering their clothes. We used to say:

"What's that scent you're wearing? Deadhead Sweater?"
