Yeah Ryan Williams. One of my favourite mixers. 30 Seconds To Mars, Alkaline Trio, Deftones, Staind...loads. Monster is a great mix. I prefer the sounds to CLA's stuff on Brand New Eyes.

Ryan Williams. Crushes the CLA mixes (Hayley as a "solo artist") and gives Ben a run for his money (good integration of Paramore as a "band").

I knew this wasn't a CLA mix just by the snare.

I would say the snare as a solo artist!

Ha ha. Yeah, I had to bring in an extra console and protools rig just for the snare! Bigger!!!! Great band!

Ryan any insight on how you got the sounds? What type of reverb is on that snare. Will you talk about your use of compression please?

Yeah Taylor played drums and guitars on this. Pretty impressive. It was tracked at Rob Cavallo's studio by Doug so all the sounds were great. Not really a lot of tracks. For drums, I used the Fatso in parallel and also a room sound from Slate Trigger. I have a few snare room sounds I've recorded that I like using for space. It just sounds a bit different than a reverb sounds. I think I also used a bit of the Snare Plate on the Lexicon 480.

huh?

How are you using TRIGGER just for Room verb? Loading a Room sample on TRIGGER still has a distinct Slate Snare'd sound.....not just the room by itself.

Do you recall which Snare room sample you used?

I loaded my own room sounds onto Trigger. I have a sample I created by putting a snare in a big tiled kitchen and placing a few mics back in the room. I have another crunchy one I made as well.

I noticed that they used drop C tuning in this track so it was nice to hear how tight the rhythm guitars stayed. Were they using their JCM2000 on this track?

Not really sure what amps were used. There really isn't a ton of gain on the sound and there aren't really a lot of tracks.

it sounds like ted mastered it. im pretty familiar with his rock masters. he mastered mudvayne's the new game album for fortman. the slate trigger program is pretty cool, i like the side chain function for eliminating false samples. the digi sample replacer use to piss me off all the time with that.

Really great mix...it seems you keep cymbals not too present in the mix..is it an accurate choice?

I usually don't hype the top end of cymbals too much. Some people add a lot of shelving EQ above 10k but I usually try to keep them a little more natural sounding. For this mix, I felt too much cymbal action would distract from the vocal.

I prefer cymbals to be pushed behind the guitars on almost every pop rock mix, it makes everything else pop out and is an easy way to keep harshness down. I also like the overall balance of the kick/snare.
