Digital connection...

a friend of mine has a Digi001 on a pc in his home studio and also a roland vs-1680 that he used to record on. So my question is two-fold. Does anyone know if that roland can run adat lightpipe into the 001? It has optical jacks on the back, but i could not figure out how to make it work. Also, i'm wanting to assume he could potentially use it as a control surface for PT, via midi... but which form of controller would he select within protools? If it helps, i think he's still on an old software version, like 5.x something...
if anyone's familiar with that Roland, it would be really helpful.

the optical is likely S/PDIF and not ADAT but check the manual. unless the Roland offers a HUI mode, which i don't think it does, it can't control PT. again, check the el manual-o.
