low filter settings to record a voice ?

Hi experts :-) !

I need some advices and already have found very good messages in these boards for this crucial question :

- to remove low rumble when I need to record a voice (vocal chain : voice --> sm7b or chinese mic --> trident s20/ trident 4 T --> lynx) what are the "usual" settings (my preamp low filter goes till 200 hz ) ?

I know if I remove too much it's difficult (or impossible) to get it back, any suggestions ?

some interesting posts I put in my favorites (maybe it can help other people)

I think as high as 100Hz could be fine. A lot of mics and preamps have low cut filters, and they tend to be values like 40, 60, 70 , 80 etc.

I wouldn't hesitate to rolloff below 40Hz. More than that, you just have to use your ears.

I have found that on really dense tracks it is amazing how high you can go on a HP filter. 100-150 w/o issues.

If the track is more sparse OR requires some intimacy you'll most like want to be careful and not go so high.

I will say that doing this up front can make any compression that comes later a lot easier to set up. W/o the LF content the compressor (especially cheap ones!) will sound much better and be more predictable.

Good luck

thanks a lot for your replies,

to summarize : it depends the song (if it's very dense we can go higher around 100 150 hz without prob)
and normaly not more than 100 Hz (but of course the best thing is to use my ears :-)

Take care !

When tracking, I almost always use a HPF at 75hz at 12db/octave. In the mix I almost always go to 100hz at 6db/octave. That way you have options, but I have to find a time when I want anything belwo 75hz in the voice, but who knows, that time may come yet, but so far, no.
