My first response would be my 1970 BSA Thunderbolt for a grand. I guess you mean musical though.....

Since I just got my 7th anniversary email from Ebay, I've forgotten a lot, but it would probably be an early 60s Slingerland kit in White Satin finish. The kit was a standard 5pc with matching snare. Absolutely mint. Factory new, even Slingerland heads top and bottom with no stick marks...and get this....even in the Slingerland gig bags. $500. I couldn't bring myself to play the kit and ended up reselling to a collector. I at least doubled my money...I think more actually, can't remember exactly.

later,
m

$410 for a Lexicon PCM-70. I think it went cheap because a button cover was missing; still works like new.

Audio Technica AT3031 for like $35 with a dent in it, not a bad little mic.

2005 Mustang convertible with 300 miles on it, $10,000 under average sell price due to wind storm damage. Looks and drives like new!

I have NO IDEA why they ever started the bidding that low. It makes me wonder if they knew what they had or if they were just "getting rid of dad's old stuff"

It's gotten pretty tough to get a good deal on Ebay...at least for things that are popular or have an established repuatation. Sometimes you find something like that RE-20 mic for $80...though that one pretty much amazes me. That's really just a bit of great luck. I was pretty impressed that I recently got an AT4047 for $260, but that's not all that impressive. Sometimes you can grab things just before they get heavy on the public's radar. As an example, I almost bid on an SPL Transient Designer 4 a couple of times awhile back. They were going for around $300 used as I recall, maybe even less...now something's happened and they're going for near new prices, kinda like Distressors. Kinda bummed I didn't bid now.

Sometimes, you can find something that's not in it's proper category. Another thing to scope out are auctions in all caps...seriously. Aside from the fact that they just don't look good, a lot of people who aren't paying mind to aesthetic concerns actually don't realize that it's difficult to read sentences that are all in caps and as such, they won't get as many people looking at them. Essentially, a big part of the mental process involved in reading involves recognizing word shapes. Next time you're on Ebay scanning lists, take note of how you respond to all those all-cap listings and you'll see what I mean. Much of the time, the people posting these auctions are the same types that use cheesy tactics like using L@@K or NOT (x) tags on their listings and aren't the sort who are tuned into anything beyond adopting a carnival barker type of attitude by yelling and USING ALL CAPITALS to "suck" people in...quite often sellers with a jillion auctions selling cheap merchandise. Sometimes though, it's just some folks who are trying to make it quick by skipping the use of the shift key.
