Control Surface and Headphone Mixes

Just was wondering what you guys use for a headphone mix while tracking using a control surface... I have been cutting a couple of records lately with a D-Command so I usaully would run a private Q system from tape out..... but if I use a control surface everytime I move a fader on the surface it will change the level to the private Q... So I run the 2 Mix from the Cue send of the D-Command which is fine for Overdubs but for tracking it blows... The Players always want different mixes...

Oh man I miss a console...

not to be rude but you may want to hire an engineer to help you get things set up since it seems you're not familiar with how things work. a control surface has nothing to do with how headphones are handled. there's no need to miss a console, you can handle everything right there. use pre fader aux sends in PT.

your not beening rude ,....but this is an issue as well.... the aux will take outputs up and are not a speedy help to acess and adjust mixes...

not sure we're on the same page.

you use a pair of outs on any interface and send all your tracks to them through the sends in PT, pre fader. these you connect to the cue in on the D Command. they are then sent to phones however the studio is set up for it. when you want to control the mix you simply adjust the aux sends via faders or encoders. make sense?

Have you checked out the PT manual? The send in PT's work just like a console does... I've done sessions with 5 different mixes for the phones and my own in the control room...

If your use to a console for cues this is really no different except on a screen..I don't have a D-command but I'm pretty sure you can flip the faders to control the aux send with the faders on the controller without messing your control room mix up.

Follow?

When I used to do overdubs on the Icon we used sends. You will find it easy to do this on a D Control or D Command with a little practice. It's a little hard for me to remember exactly as I haven't had an Icon in front of me for a few months (since O'Henry shut down ), but I had gotten pretty fast at it.

Press the "Do To All" button and press the "Sends" button under "assign". You should be able to assign your sends on all channels using the encoders. The buttons under the encoders will kinda function like an "enter" button. Just assign them to an available out and you're good. Make sure to press "do to all" again so everything you after isn't done to all!!! That's a dangerous button. Hint: The do to all and do to selected buttons can follow latching or momentary behavior- i.e. if you HOLD the do to all button, when you release it will no longer be in use. It's a good practice to get into when using them.

Anyhow, once you're done you can just press sends under "view" and the encoders on all channels should display your aux levels. You can even set it so the channels you need to cue mix display their send level in custom faders, so when you are done overdubbing you can exit CF mode and in normal view use the encoders to display eq/dynamics, etc. It's hard for me to explain as I mostly did it with muscle memory, but it's easy to show. I did this for dozens and dozens of projects all day long last year and it's very effective- you just have to be used to doing it. I can't imagine you not having enough analog outs for this unless you are using a ton of outboard gear or only have enough outs for a summing box, if you're using one. Otherwise it's a piece of cake once you learn it.

Using a vintage Pro Control here..

'copy to sends' is a good feature in PT to get a copy of the fader levers & pans to a headphone mix..(interface output)

Works fine..

I have done this and it works great.. I guess I should have expressed that it is more of a fustration using all the analog outs. I am using a Chandler summing box and I like to use all 16 out to this...so on my rig right know I have 16in and 16 out so to get 4 seperate cue mixes I would use 8 outs 4stereo or 5 outs 1 stereo ( for drummer ) and 3 mono mixes.
