Leveling/Metering

Hi! I am new here and have a question I've been dying to know the answer to...

Why is it when I record into Pro Tools my mic pre and a/d and slamming (with some overs) but the meter level in Pro Tools in perfect and the sound is fine (not distorted)?

Am I doing something wrong or is this simply because of the available headroom in the pre and a/d?

Thanks a pantload

could be that , and the filter in the AD converters are doing their job well ,
without noticeable artifacts ,
and you could be incoming calibrated to a different level...
Many variables !

ah yes... there is where I bet my answer lies (or is it lyes?)... but I digress

So how do I properly calibrate my pres>a/d>PT>d/a, so that all of this looks nice and pretty as it should?

Thanks man!

If you're "slamming" your A-D, you're way, WAY into the headroom of the preamp (and everything after it) -

A 0dBVU signal (where your preamp is designed to run) will register somewhere around -18 or -16dBFS at your converters (and therefore, in the DAW).
