MOTU 828 mk1 - still worth it?

Is anyone still using the MOTU 828mk1?

I'm after a MOTU soundcard with the optical SPDIF input which i'll mainly be using, and power straight out to monitors/ADAM A7's via the analog 1-2 outs but the Optical SPDIF in to record monitor.

Are these still ok with 10.6 and 10.7 OS X? Have asked MOTU and they say it should be fine but just wanted some real word views..

They are quite cheap now, but just wanted something solid and relaible for a SPDIF input source whilst monitoring to my speakers.

Secondly I could use the fw1394 on my laptop with an old PCMCIA card - is there a simple way of finding out if this has the TI chipset that MOTU recommend from with XP? it has nothing on the case?

Thanks

I've been using the MOTU 828mk1 for a few years on an Acer laptop running XP (connected with a mini firewire cable). It's not great on PC, you have to disable the internal soundcard.

But last year I recorded my band into a friend's MacBook. I can't remember exactly but I think it used OS 10.5 and the MOTU ran fine (although we didn't use any digital inputs or outputs, only firewire to the MacBook).

The drivers were downloaded from the MOTU site and we recorded 8 tracks analogue into Garageband.

I still have an 828mk1 that has worked fine for me in 10.5 and 10.6 with the latest Firewire drivers from MOTU's site.

Just curious and only slightly off topic.... I have a Mk2 and wondered if I can daisy chain a Mk1 for more I/O (mainly O) for 16 outputs to an analog board. Will the Mk1 do this in conjunction with the Mk2?
Thx

According to the manual I am now reading yes :

You can add an original MOTU 828 to the end of a
FireWire daisy chain (because the 828 has only one
FireWire port),

I've still got mine and still use it occasionally with my newish MacBook Pro. Not bad for the used prices they go for.

The headroom however is not so hot.

Would these MOTU 828mk1's still work on 10.8 Mountain Lion?

I've got a mII that I've had replaced several times. I think I'm on my fourth one. Each one gets the same issue where one resistor or something starts burning the mother board and loses it's solder, so it won't start up correctly 9 times out of 10, no exaggeration. I have to sit there and continually restart until it works finally. They are happy to keep replacing it and paying the shipping, but I'm not happy to continually go without an interface.

Hopefully that offers some insight. It's a great product when it's working! It's probably just a problem with the mII's and that one small piece of electronics, but it's been prevalent through all 4 of mine.

Been using 828 MK1 for 10 years ADAT lightpiped from my yamaha aw4416 which is spdf'd from my apogee rosetta. Works great. OS 10.6.8

Internal Conversion is not the best, though.
