Threads marked as read?

I am having this dialog with a newly registered VIP member and am at a loss for how to help him.

Any deas how to solve his problem?

Thanks in advance!

Jules

Hi again Jules. Sorry to bother you.

There does not seem to be a mechanism to mark all threads as "read"
or to automatically choose to see unread posts... There is a "new
posts" button an an icon to tell you that threads are unread, but no
way to clear them all?

Thanks for the tip. Then, do those posts get marked read? If I don't read it, I want it marked read so I don't get bothered by it again.

Sorry to be a pain in the butt, but I think You need a "marked read" button...

First of all, what the hell is a VIP member, and second, use your memory. If you don't want to read something, don't read it.

The threads I've read change from bold title text to plain, in the "new posts" window.

EDIT - All windows, as far as I can see.

....."Mark Forums Read"... just to the right of "New Posts".

This of course is global and not thread or individual forum specific.

Threads will show up again in 'New Posts' as soon as there is one but this'll do it... if I understand what he/she is after.

I've just started using these features lately and they are a huge time saver.

I open up the site and click on [new posts].

Then I click and read (and possibly respond) to any posts I am interested in.

As soon as I am done, I click on [new posts] one last time to make sure nothing new has slipped in, then go to the main page and click on [Mark Forums Read].

I no longer have to go through all the different forums to search for new stuff.

Hmmmm.... I'll check that. I don't know what a VIP member is, either...

But I have never seen a button marked "mark read" to the right of "new posts". Maybe it's a SAFARI /Mac problem...

Nope, the [Mark Forums Read] button is near the bottom, right above the list of currently active users.

What I do:

After I read all of the threads that I want to read in a given sub-forum (High End, New Product Alert, etc.) I click on FORUM TOOLS (upper right) and select MARK FORUM READ from the drop-down. Now, the next time I go to that particular sub-forum, only new posts that have appeared since my last visit will be listed in BOLD. Just do this every time you leave a forum and you're set.

The other alternative is to click on MARK FORUMS READ at the bottom of the main page to simultaneously mark ALL of the sub-forums as read.

I just tried Firefox and Safari on Mac and there does not appear to be a button or link marked "Mark Forums Read".

What I have seen is if you log out and then log in, then EVERYTHING is marked as read in all threads in the forum, even if you haven't read them... This is not good... There should be a button or choice to allow you to mark as read threads or forums on a selective basis.

Thanks. I found it. It's kind of lame.... The object is to use "mark read" as a kind of bookmark and the system should not mark all the threads in a forum as read as a default...

For example. Supposing I go into the "high end" forum, and I see a dozen threads I want to read. I read half of them, each time returning to the high end main page. The icons remain marked as "unread". Now say I do not have time to read all the threads that interest me (who does!) and so I want to have the threads I have read marked as read! But the remaining ones in "high end" left as new. But If I log out and then come back, ALL the threads on that main page for "high end" have been marked as read. So there's not control, no bookmark.

As a "newbie" of Gearslutz I may be missing something obvious, but I have seen other forum software that allows you to mark selected forums as read one at a time. It should be enough if you could mark SELECTED forums as read... because most times you can read a single forum's new posts in a single session.

But wouldn't it be nice if you can go into a thread, push the button that says "go to first new post", then read those posts, then go back to the list of threads and find that thread marked as read? I think it unbolds in sync with the little envelope icon on the left, but let me go back after I post this message and see if maybe it unbolds, that would be nice.

Bob, I usualy hit this site while I'm on my old (t)rusty G3 w/ IE5 (ehe).. so that's what I'm seeing in that browser. I do see (now) that I have the "Forum Tools" function for marking individual forums but mines at the bottom left... way down below the viewer list.

Here's what the top page looks like for me in IE5...

I hear ya, but it is still better than nothing. The idea is to use it with the new posts view. Of course if you don't check often (like if you have a life or something )
the amount of new posts will be overwhelming. It works better for addicts like me.

Welcome Bob!

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but there is a "subscribe" feature. When you open a thread, in the "Thread Tools" button you'll find subscribe. If you subscribe, the thread will show up with a blue boxed check mark in the forums and new post search. Any thread you post in will be subscribed to (I should check that out in my user profile, it may be an option). If you click on your "user cp" button all your current subscriptions should be there, and you can view all of the subscribed threads as well. You can unsubscribe if you lose interest in a thread or if it suddenly goes south, not that that ever happens here!
