old thread...trying to figure this out myself. I already read everything on this sight ![]() I owned an m88 and sold it...it was cool but I found the mid (around 1k) to sound a bit "hard" if you will. I know there isn't a peak there but the tone to me in that area stood out in a weird way to me. How similar are these mics in tone (m88 and m69)? Is it just that the m88 goes deeper in the bass or do they sound different overall? I really like Beyer mics. I am interested in another dynamic mic for vocals cut at home in an apartment. I already have an sm7, 635a, i5 and a pair of mc930s. I record rock mostly and use an ma5 and vp26 preamps along w/my harrison EQ and hairball 1176 rev d into a duet and logic. My ear hates any trace of sibilance. I like the mics I have...I would just like a nice flavor to compliment them. I pretty much use my other mics for other things and want another dynamic for vocals. I have owned in the past u195, umt70s, 4047, m88 ~ the one I miss of those is the umt70s but I think a LDC in an apartment is a pain (turn off the fridge and ac haha). Thanks...any general opinions would be nice. I might try and buy tomorrow on a black Friday sale. Happy Thanksgiving.

The M69TG is a great live vocal mic. You do not see a lot of them around though. I have used them on instruments in a pinch. However, it was always easy to use on vocals. No instant, WOW!, just really solid on almost every vocal I have tried it on.

I have the older M69n(c) model as well as the newer M88 TG and I personally prefer the M69, "especially" on acoustic guitar. Just sounds more natural to me as opposed to the "hyper boosted" sound of the 88.

FWIW , I have used both many years ago and my thoughts were that the 69 was a "poor man's 88" - If you have the loot, one to go for IMO is the Sennheiser 441- quality all the way. Cheers, Ross |

I have never tried a 441...would LOVE to, but it's a bit pricey (more than I want to spend). I should have mentioned, I am going to fly out of town and take my duet to record some overdubs w/a client in San Diego and I would like like to take a couple dynamics that are small in size...so my sm7 is staying home. The 635a is a little lean in the bottom for this project (vocals). I'll take my i5 but wanted something else to try. I'll most likely re-process (bounce) the tracks back through my ma5 (line in) and 1176 when I get back to Texas. Thanks for the ideas guys...open to other suggestions as well...and I spent 2 nights reading just about every thread on this subject. Considered the re16 but I like proximity effect. Thanks for the input. |

If it's vocals you are after mostly, maybe check out the Telefunken M80 or maybe one of the Heil mics. I use the M80 for location recording all the time and it works really well. The only other thing I've recorded with it is snare and it worked pretty well.

I have used the m80 for snare and it sounded great..."pre-EQ'd" with a lot of top...so it may be too bright for what I am looking for (but maybe not...have not tried it on vocals). Have used the pro 40 too...it's cool but not exactly what I want (again...it's big and I want a compact mic for a few reasons: traveling, and also easy to place in tight spots). I might just try the m 69 for giggles...thanks again for the feedback! |

441 is awesome, but I would not use it live, only for the studio that one. IO own all three and would agree for studio work. | |

Thanks, Aisle 6! Do you like the m69 for vocal recording at all? Can you compare it sonically to the m88? Thanks for your time. You own all 3 so your input is valuable to me. Appreciate it |

I believe the M69 was designed for really close miking of guitar cabs/instruments etc, that's why its so flat on top, to get the diaphragm very close to the outside.

| Never tried it for vocal recording. I am spoiled for choice. I like it live as the proximity effect is less apparent than say a 58.
