fatso's gettin' hit hard

Seems the fatso is getting to much signal in the front end. When I back the input down I don't get enough compression. When I gain it the crunch lights go off too soon...not the warmth but the saturations leds. Any ideas. My chain was a Lawson to a 1073 to the fatso...singer was belting...had a 12 db pad on the mic and the pre was at 30db. Anyone have this problem?

I noticed the same thing when I was trying to use it on the 2 bus.I was going for 3-4 db but it was getting too dirty with the saturation. It says something in the manual about inserting a level device in the insert and raising the gain to lower the threshold and distortion but I don't know what to use to do this without affecting the sound quality.Does anybody know if a mic pre would be suitable?I wish there was a way to lower the threshold built in.

What he said...

I belive to get very acurate control between warmth & the compression action you need to get into this technique...

Look into it!

(I dont do it myself I just like to use the warmth function)

You could use an RNC in the insert to lower the threshold, or if you email Dave Derr at Empirical Labs. He might be able to tell you how to adjust it internally, as I think there's a screw pot for this.

A mic pre should work just fine.
