Thread Starter | OT: Recording Industry Contracts
Sorry for the OT - but I wanted to know if anyone here can give some advice. I am about to contact a lawyer to get advice on various kinds of relationships I have working as a producer, recording musician, song-writer, in the recording phase of three CD projects - what kind of contracts should be established to govern these relationships. a few questions: 1) anyone recommend a lawyer in the bay area? 2) is it necessary to work with a lawyer this early in the process - pre-record deal but music's in development. 3) recommend where to get sample contracts? 4) any other advice welcome ... thx. |

I can help you with two of those fine Bay Areas... but for now I'm assuming you mean the San Francisco Bay Area. My guy there is Ned Hearn 408-998-3400. He's not a "shopper" per se, but he's a savvy veteran of many a heavy record-contract, and a sweet guy. Tell him I said hello. -dave |

Just real quick.... 1. I would say not yet. That's money you could be saving for when it's really needed. 2. No-There's no need for the big L in a early production situation. What r u worried about exactly? That you will be left out on the production side? How much of the writing r u doing? R U with ascap or bmi? These are some more important questions you should worry about. When doing your songs do you have a copy of the songs yourself? Do you have a copy of the sessions you do with them when coming up with these masterpieces? (Demos/ or nondemos) 3. There is a very good or should I say GREAT book by Kashif called "Everything You Should Know About The Music Business"- Please if you don't have it get it-right away and read it three and four times. 4. I would not mess with any Lawyers other than those from two regions-New York and LA. Always get a Music Lawyer of course. I hope this helps.... M2E |
