What do you think?
Out the box, in the box, under the box, next to the box, not even close to the box...
Music doesn't really matter, creativity doesn't really matter...
just fidelity-wise...hi-fi....
what's the best?
Edit: Feel free to share any background on your pick....how it was recorded, what you like about it, and so on....

I vote for any Roger Waters solo album. They sound the best to me.
EDIT: Doh! Uhh, well, I guess that's 20th century. Ca Ira sounds amazing, tho!

To stay on topic: I like the latest version of "Four Seasons" performed by
Anne Sophie Mutter (and the trondheim soloists). Great sound! Check it out!
But as far as i can remember it´s from ´99... not really 21st century...

Sam Phillips - A Boot and a Shoe
It doesn't sound like the 21st Century, though. And that is probably a good thing.

elbow - cast of thousands. doesn't sound like a daw even entered the picture. plates and springs and chambers, oh my!
zero 7 - simple things. 2" tape and fleximix, the warm hybrid sound, so much compression, yet so listenable.
beck - sea change. everything's up front, just how i like it.
phoenix - alphabetical. so bright, yet so api, some of the clearest punchiest mixes ever.

| The Bad Plus
I like the sound of the most recent Bad Plus album, Suspicious Activity quite a bit. Nothing revolutionary, just sounds real, parts that are played quieter, piano alone, are, gasp, not as loud as the whole ensemble going for it.
Other mentions: QOTSA, Jim O'Rourke: Insignificance, many others slipping my mind. There have been good recordings made in 21st century.

Check out their "The Invisible Band" album also, it might even be better (it's so different it's hard to say).

that's kinda the only reason I listen to music, and try to record/mix. So my vote might not count here, but my favorite is The Delgados album "hate is all you need"

Mars Volta - Deloused and Frances the Mute | since this thread is just about sound quality....i like volta a lot...but frances is one of the most atrocious sounding things i have ever heard. distorted and crushed to death. could not even make it through the whole thing even after looking forward to it for weeks.
oh, and sea change is just phenominal. also the frisell record with elvin jones and dave holland. and the last radiohead album....there's a bunch more but that;s the first things that come to mind.
