Combo amp/speaker replacement

I need to replace the 12" Jensen in my 1967 Ampeg Gemini I. Does Jensen make a replacement for this speaker, or will I have to get something a little different? I like the way it sounded with the old one.. So, I'd like to stay right there if I could.

I think it's going to be very unlikely that you are going to get an 'identical' replacement. Try someone like:

http://www.ampaholics.org.uk/VINTAGE%20SPEAKERS.htm (in the UK)

or for a new replacement:

http://www.vintagespeaker.com/search...ctmain=Speaker

Can you get the original speaker reconed - it won't sound exactly the same but at least it will retain some originalilty. This is what I would do.

If the speaker has disappeared then I suggest you try a modern celestion vintage (or whatever you fancy) and see if you like the sound.

Another alternative would be to try ebay ??

Hey Orange, thanks for the links.

http://www.jensenvintage.com/
I found this after I first posted, I just wonder if they are still a quality speaker. You know... Do they make em like they used to? Just checking if I can buy w/ confidence, or if I should exercise a little QC of my own..

I read a thread on Vintage 30s, and guys were saying to look out for this, watch out for made in China, etc.. (I'm going V 30 for a different 2-12 cab.)

www.webervst.com

They have tons of speakers and make something similar to old Jensen's. I am using the Thames (Fane) and Californias (JBL) in a Fender Quad Reverb and they rock the house.

I don't really have any evidence that the modern Jensen speakers are the same as the originals but my suspicion is that they will be 'different'

what has happened to the original speaker ?

I still have the old speaker. It's just very old, and tired. I could re-cone it, I guess.

Hey Colin.
I'm thinking of trying a Weber in my Vibro Champ.
Maybe I'll try something else in the Ampeg.
It just sounds so good w/ the Jensen. Hmmm..

why not try a recone anyway - it should be pretty cheap and at least it keeps it original (retaining it's value ?).

I collect old amps - or at least I buy them and it's turned into a collection ! - and I always look for the most original I can.

Where in the US are you ? can someone suggest a decent recone company ?

I'm that way with drums and guitars too. I may swap pickups, but I'm not looking to drill holes or rout out any wood. Being able to bring it back to original is big for me. So, maybe a re-cone. I didn't know if that was the *right* thing to do w/ an original.

My Ampeg is at my techs place right now. He told me Jensen makes 2 replacements from their vintage series. P12Q - $70-$80... P12N - almost $200..!! It's some kind of re-issue or something. It has the bell cover, etc..

Re-cone, here I come...

If robots in space are using this speaker, then, dammit, it's the one for me!

I should make this robot my avatar. Nahhh, then I'd have to lose the dancing Strong Bad (www.homestarrunner.com). Whaddaya think, GilWave -- should I retire Strong Bad?
