New York chapter of Gearslutz!

Looking to put together a semi-formal chapter of the NYC slutz (Don't know if this exists, but if not, we should get this local community going- It can really help us out to combine resources for gear shootouts, referrals, local specific business, etc.) 100% official now and thanks for doing this Larry and Steve Remote! - Jules GS admin. I was totally blown away with the response James Lugo, Picksail and b-magical got in LA during Namm, so I was hoping to get this coast swinging (kind of balance out the country). The first meeting, I am hoping, will be at my place this Thursday March 16th at 2pm til ?, to help me shootout pre's for my brand new Brauner KHE.
I am presently in possesion of a Vipre, RNP, Fearn VT-1, Pendelum Audio Quartet 2(both on loan from Mercenary--thanks Jay!)- I do have limited space so I have to ask that anyone who comes, to please bring their favorite pre (looking for a vintage Neve, telefunken, Massenburg for comparison)and we'll let em rip. thumbsup I have space for about 15, so first come first serve. If you are interested please email me with the name of the pre you are bringing and time you can make it and I will get back to you.
Sorry for the short notice but my loaners have to go back in a week.
Thanks Larry

Yo Larry!

Man, I could be down for that I think!

I've actually got a pre-pro meeting with a band & their manager on Thursday night in Manhatten (somewhere off Ludlow) so that might work out beautifuly! As long as I'm where I need to be in NYC by 8:30 or 9pm it's all good. So if there's a big enough group & ya'll are cool with my schedules I could pop over with a pair of Telefunken V672's...all racked up with phantom, polarity & variable gain.

thursday nights

Well, I usually go to gallery openings and am bribed to look at crap on walls with unknown quantities(I can't ever remember how much I drank) of bad free wine on Thursdays, this sounds better.

Great responses so far. Steve I would have called you later but I am glad you saw the post. I would love for you to bring those Daking's again. Moose I would love it if you came as well, the tele's are perfect. As I said first come first serve. Let me know what pre's you can contribute and that gains you entree' to the show. Sorry but its BYOP this time as I have limited space. I would love to have everybody over can't fit em-- though I promise an open house on my roof the 4th of July and more engineering fun. Rookie Slutz are allowed of course.
I will have a male and female vocalist that day singing to acoustic guitar tracks to keep it simple. We'll start at 2pm and end whenever the beer runs out.
So far the thread is the list --- 3 or 4 positive replies.
We'll finalize the list on Wednesday eve.

Thanks Larry

NJ here - couldn't make it in the afternoon but if you ever schedule anything for a night or weekend...
In terms of pres, all I have is a cranesong spider - probably wouldn't want to yank that and the big power supply out of my rack, is it just pres that you guys are shooting out?

I can tell you NOW without needing to get together that you should use whatver high quality mic pre you are using on the entire record.

The last record I finished had 2 sm-7's, 1 KM-84, 2 STC 4038's, a U67, 2 Gefell UM900's, 6 Gefell UM71's, and a Brauner VMa all recorded through the same Neve 8088.
That was the console.. no other pre required, or wanted.

right now i'm in the middle of an album with similar mics, everything going through ther API desk.
Same idea.

William

I am actually looking at a tonelux 16 channel desk for my place, sounds very nice. I agree that any high quality pre would do. But I still enjoy the quest to find that "ultimate sound"--Damn sound has been in my head since I started my studio 12 years ago, to me its like hunting for the perfect girl-- a lot of hot chicks would and could do the job but there is always that special one--a perfect match!. We are slutz and love excess but I think we are always on a quest for the elusive nirvana of sound. So the quest goes on.

So far 4 comers to the shootout. If you are coming give me a call at the studio 718-392-8099 and leave your number I'll get back to you and we'll work out the details.

Thanks Larry

hey, if i'm not mistaken you misunderstood william's point. he wasn't saying you should use whatever pre you are currently using, he was saying that *every track* on your album should be recorded thru the same type of pre.

maybe you got that, but it's such a great point i figured i'd clarify just in case. the approach is wonderfully old school, and is imo part of the reason older recordings have such a pronounced vibe and gel so much better than most modern records where everything sits so clearly in its own sonic space.

a lot of music these days, pop music in particular, seems less focused on 'mixing' and more obsessed with 'separating'. BAH!

btw, it's too bad your event is thursday, the one day a week i'm out of town, otherwise i'd love to come by with a chandler in one hand and a millenia in the other.

I love the idea thats why I am interested in the tonelux, the pre's are great and the summing awesome.

It's funny but I spoke with Tonelux's Paul Wolff just the other day about that-- actually his new bus comp (whenever its ready) and how it will help with the mixing- and how the 2 (audio that is mixed and yet distinct) were mutually exclusive. To me the holy grail as far as a desired end result is a congealed mix with depth, dimension and individual clarity--Getting there!.
We will do another one soon I promise, I would mostly love just to get the NYC crew together from time to time, exchange numbers and create a scene.
So we'll catch you next time.thumbsup

Can't make this one, but count me in for a NY-based GS chapter and potential future get-togethers.

Sorry I can't make this one!

Larry, I got your phone message today, thanks for the invitation.

This is for Thursday of next week, right? I probably can't make it. If it's for this week, I definitely can't.

How last minute is it ok to RSVP?
