Out of Protools -->
Burl B2 Bomber DAC -->
Manley Backbone (The ultimate 2 channel mixer IMHO)-->
Shadow Hills Mastering Comp-->
Amtec EQP10's-->
Maslec MPL-2 -->
SSL G Comp-->
Neve 33609 -->
GML 8200-->
Out of Backbone-->
Burl B2 Bomber ADC
Into Protools -->

SSL comp/Neve comes in and out if needed for the tune.

Been loving this chain for 6 months now! Everyone should try a backbone on their insert bus. It rocks and gives you so many options.

Nice! Just curious which DSD recorder you use. Thinking about getting one myself and notice there aren't that many options (tascam, denon). Also- which quality format are you using? I notice they offer wav, MP3, etc.
Thanks

I use a Tascam DV-RA1000. I record to 2.8mhz 1bit DSD format,which sounds way better than PCM mode, at least on the Tascam. Some people prefer the Korg MR series of DSD recorders, which can actually record the double DSD format..IE 5.6Mhz 1bit. Although the Korg machine doesn't have an optical drive. Both machines sound great to my ears.

Once you have a DSD master stored on a DVD or hard drive you can convert downwards to whatever PCM format you want using a program like Korg Audiogate.

I have a pair of 2 foot runs of Kimber AGSS pure silver/teflon wire using silver Neutrik XLR connectors. The analog console output feeds a PCM/DSD4222 EVM board, direct coupled, no caps. That is refitted with Analog Devices ADA4898-1 opamps at .9 nv noise and 60 v/us slew rate.

I record 44.1k PCM for CD prep. I'm not convinced the DSD/PCM conversions work that well yet. The ADC chip is the same as used in the Tascam DSD recorder.

I paid $149 for the converter and Ray Kimber gave me the wire for free.
The results: Priceless.

Custom 2buss on heavily modded Yamaha PM2000, using the insert to get into a Dramastic Obsidian or Charter Oak SCL-1. SOMETIMES using a 2buss EQ, either a Charter Oak PEQ1 or pair of Amtec PEQ10...something broad-stroke...back into DAW via RADAR or Apogee converters.

What's with putting all this crap on your 2 mix? I'm not trying to troll, but I see massive lists of gear in chains here, to the point of being destructive.

Does anyone ever just mix out of their console and print it to tape? Or just bounce to disk? We all need 14 compressors and 7 limiters after our 2 mixes now?

What about the mastering engineer?!!?!?

Sorry, someone help me understand the need for all this... I have quite a bit of these kinds of pieces but they aren't getting slapped on my 2 mix!

NOT TROLLING, JUST ASKING!

peace,

Never listen to opinions regarding tape, digital, analog, plug-ins, hardware, software, amp modelers, etc. For every 50 nobodies on Gearslutz that say a piece of gear doesn't sound good enough to cut it, I know at least one somebody who is cutting it in NYC with that piece of gear.

peace,
Two totally different ways of mixing. Both are valid. I do both but generally have at least one comp across the mix.

The idea that compressing a mix is the mastering engineers job is insane.

That's one of the tools at their disposal IF they feel the mix needs it.

Maybe it will just need an EQ dip or two....Maybe it will not need anything.
