Does Length matter?

ok...jokes are totally appropriate....but seriously....

I've heard, the longer the mic chord...the better the chance of compromised quality. At what length does this become an issue?

I'm wondering if I should have my pre-amp closer to my mic , thus having a longer chord from the preamp to the computer...or the other way around...or does it not matter, length is length? The distance from my mic to the computer is about 15 feet.

thanks for any input...

For 15 feet it probably does not matter. Mic signals travel many many feet in pro studios till they get to the consoles or preamps. I like the preamp where the engineer sits so you can diddle with gain while someone else sings.

I've put in runs around 150 feet that were usablefrom bay to panel, then add on mic cable to the mic. you're 15' will do just fine and we won't have to get into cable types at your length

on the other hand the Gordon mic preamp comes with a remote control so that the preamp can be located as close as possible to the mic.

You could probably not tell much from 1/2 mile. Maybe a slight delay?
