Neve 33609

Ok Six Wax I got the idea.

I got one word for you...

Neve.

Neve 33609(the original one's though not the new J's).

Its one of my favorites on the mix, drumsub and sometimes background vocals.

Its not cheap though, we are talking $4500 and up!!!

I would have suggested the Vari-Mu but it imparts a lot of character and I don't feel its as versatile, but it could also be used in this fashion.

i'd like to hear some gearsltut talk about this piece of gear.

a friend has this piece of gear that looks identical but does not say neve or anything on the front. on the side [i think] is the only place that it says anything, and it only has NEVE and a sireal #, no model #. what does that mean?

how much should i pay for this [if it is in fact a 33609]?

how does it compare to the VARI-MU?

I think this quote was from me?

The unit you are looking at is the original one.

How much should you pay? Well that's more on the guy selling it isn't?

I like it because it has the color plus that "Neve something".

On the 2 buss you just have to do a slight ''hi-boost" with an EQ to make up for the color.

It is different than the Vari-Mu. There are certain instances where I liked it better than MU on the 2 buss, but I could go the other way also. It is also great on a drumsub(real meaty).

My personal favorite on a 2 buss is the Focusrite Blue 230, sorta a clean 33609, but a little more versatile.

yup

well this guy who has it is kind of clueless, he did'nt even know to pronounce NEVE "nehveee" he said. he knows that it is worth alot but not how much. he is also a friend and i would want to pay a fair price, but at the same time i would rather pay a "lower end" fair price. $4000 maybe?

Focusrite Blue 230

do you own or have you used an STC-8? how does it compare to the NEVE or the Focusrite?

i am looking for something to put on the 2 bus. i do kind of like the idea of some warmth along with the comp/limeting. [i use a PTHD DAW with a HEDD for my main AD/DA]

Current market value for a recently recapped, recal'ed 33609 is $5k+ USD... the bottom on them is much much tighter than the bottom on a Manley Variable-MU®... which I have found if used more than just a light touch turns the bottom end into a washed out ball of puss.

The STC-8 is an entirely different beast... being far and away more versatile and overall a hell of a lot clearer than either... the peak limiter in it being seamless and the A-Mod and auto release functions taking it to another dimension of usefulness for the purpose.

In the 33609 vein of compression... I have been using the Daking Fet Compressors as a very viable alternative to 33609's... they seem to have "that thing" to them like the 33609's without the maintenance issues.

Best of luck.

I tried the Dakings on the two buss on my last project, and didn't really care for it; what settings are you starting with?

Back in the day I think I owned STC-8 serial number 3 or 4?

Back then I owned a commercial studio also and all the freelancers had the hardest time figuring it out, so I got rid of it.

I did get to use it a bunch of times and I thought it was nice, but at the time i liked other things more(Neve 33609 for eg. Since then in using it at different studios I have kinda grown used to it. If I need transparent compression on the 2 buss, its what I reach for. Its funny though, these says I am so into transparent compression when tracking vocals(most of the time I don't use any), that you would think I would dig it, but i much prefer the GML comp or the Sontec comp for this purpose. They seem to caress the vocal "o so" slightly, that it just seems more pleasant to my ears.

By the way I've owned all of the big (3) Neve compressors: Neve 2254E,32264a and the 33609. A couple of years ago I got rid of my 33609(they are a staple alot of the studios here in the city). To me the most versatile is the 32264a and the most colored is the 2254E. But the 33609 is the only one I would use on a 2 buss.

They are cool.
