Rock/Metal Drum Samples

I just lost my whole sample library (long story), I had a great collection of drum samples that were given to me when I did a favor for a producer. I can't get them back now. I had some killer kicks and toms. Good snares too. RIP

Where do you get samples to blend in behind real drum tracks? Do you just sample the drums on every session (or just good sessions) and save them up, or do you buy sample libraries or collections?

While we're on the topic, do you guys have any special tricks or techniques you use when blending samples in? Eq/Mult/Comp tricks? (I know it's depends on the sound, I mean general things you do)

And finally...does anyone want to donate some rock/metal drum samples to a worthy cause...

just sample the kit from the session at hand. or rent or borrow some kits and make your own samples.

I actually did sample the kit from the session, but the problem is that the snare was a little out of tune and when I compress it the way I want it it brings out the nasty ring, it's not something I can really eq out effectively either.

allencollins- PM'ed you, I appreciate it man

I general only use samples in case some problem arises later (a rim hit that got by me or something like that)

I am more likely to have them cut to a click so I can cut and paste entire sections if I have to

I do sample every kit on every session though. And burn them onto dvd

"go out there and hit every drum 4 times as hard as you can"

never know when you might need them

Hello

i record mainly in a small room, so i generally rely on alot of drum samples because my room does not sound that great. i was wondering if anyone has any drum samples? mainly more rock and metal because that tends to be the sort of music i deal with. mainly tom samples, i am having a nightmare finding ones to suit the music, and desperatly need them

any help or samples would be appreciated =]

I generally go out there and hit the drums about 20 times each from left to right ( 10 each ) then gradually softer, I did this over the years and ended up with this!

For rock and metal it's hard to beat Steven Slate Drums. Extensive information here on GS about them. Drumagog, Kontakt and wavs.

It's different every time - just depends what kind of sound I need to get.
I'll sometimes use a kick sample with lots of attack and chop off all of the bottom end so I just have the 'click' to mix in with the original kick.
Also use this on snares when there's too much bleed. Use a sample to boost the high end but cut what you don't need in order to keep the snare sound intact.
etc, etc, etc...

I tend to make my own samples too. The drummer I use most often has a few REALLY nice snares (a nice maple Gretsch and a sick Noble & Cooley), but his kicks sound like ass. It's more of the tunage and D112 that makes it suck. Old samples to the rescue!

BTW, your username is hilarious!

Supersonic has a pretty good reputation in the metal community. I'm working on a metal based sample pack right now!

firefox brought the site up,
but a lot of the links "cannot be found"

How do you actually download the samples when you're directed to one of the plain white pages with the "parent directory" folders and such?

that always confused me

thanks

yes a lot of the links a re broken, thats too bad.. but theres still some good ones out there..

i recommend.. the off site link to GSCW drums a great collection of 2 kits fully sampled soft to load.. very nice --hefty 180mb file - took me around 24 hours at dialup speed ;)

also another good one was my kick drum collection sweet collection of snipped kick drums from many metal bands

if its in directory view.. its easy (this is html viewer ftp style) .. if its a folder looking icon, click to open (ie chimera)... if its something else its usually a file, just dbl clik to dl (or right ckick, save as).. i think i got the toms off of that site (also very nice)

Steven, what's the legal status of using band names to promote your products? I'm not saying it's a problem, I just found that surprising...

drumagog replace sample question

Does the sample stay the same on every hit or does it follow the volume of what it is replacing (ie..snare that gets loud and quiet during very fast blast-beat type stuff)?

Also, are some or all of your files easily looped in Sonar? Meaning do you have full kit samples that loop or just individual hits?

Thanks.

zak as per my website:

"The band names appearing on this website are trademarks of their respective owners, which are in no way associated with Yellow Matter Entertainment, LLC.

These trademarks are used solely to identify the bands whose drum sounds were studied during Yellow Matter Entertainment's drum sound development."

Filthy these are individual drum hits that have been assembled in a beat form via midi. You can easily use them in Sonar via Kontakt and many of my customers use Sonar.

I second the GSCW kits.
So far the best free samples I've found in a few months of searching.
I think I may bite the bullet and pay for the Steven Slate Stuff
