Someone moved the mic back too!

Great stuff!

I love watching classic 'mic moving moments' from the 50's & 60's

The drumming was OK too!

All I can say.........being one of the "kids today"

Modern pop will pass as it always does, but the fans have to want it. Supply/Demand. and it will happen when someone steps forward, puts everyone to shame and starts a new trend (TALENTED MUSICIANS) that the major labels will want to cash in on it, and start seeking it out.

Cash Rules.

Actually, I think he was talking about how fast the left hand was, not the grip style...but I could be wrong.

Yeah, he was pretty amazing, but as mentioned, a total prick.

I love the way he angles the snare drum down towards the front of the kit, and they way he plays so hunch-backed. He had to have developed back problems playing like that.

I met him when I was about 13 after seeing him play live. It was around 1983 or 1984. He yelled a lot at his band members, but then I saw him talking and laughing with all of them after the show. I was kind of scared to go meet him but he turned out to be a very nice guy. He took the time to really talk to me and ask me questions! He asked me if I practiced and said that practice is what it takes to become good. Later I thought that was odd since I heard he never practiced.

Sorry for the rant but.....

I must say that I am a HUGE WHO fan.... I mean no disrespect but I think the hero worship of a dead musician in a legendary band needs some critical thinking. Keith Moon was not even on the same league, not even in the same state let alone the same stage as Buddy. Sorry.

I think the Who would have been a much better band with a better drummer. I know it is all the rage to say Moon was so good and I know this is not going to be a popular thing to say about a "god" and all…

I have the Who's Next behind the scenes video were they talk about the recording of the album. Roger is talking about how much of a genius Keith was because he follows the vocal pattern with his kick drum. He was a genius because he followed the vocal with his kick? He was a serious over player, he did not have good chops, he never grooved and he was a very repetitive player, the same fills used over and over again..

On that same tape they have a demo version of some of the songs from Pete's studio with Pete playing drums, honestly the songs were better for it. I get the feeling that Pete was frustrated and annoyed with Keith's playing, he would never disrespect the memory of "Keith Moon" by saying so in public but you can just tell from interviews and such. There was something there that he was not happy with, as a song writer I know where he is coming from.

Keith Moon is not a drunk Buddy Rich, Keith Moon is a drunk Keith Moon.

Boy, that brought back some memories. Buddy did a concert/clinic at my high school (Fairfax, in Northern VA) in '73, it was like watching a drummer from Mars for me because I'd never heard anyone (even Moonie!) in my 17 years who could do those things on a kit.

I still hold Moonie up as my favorite all-time drummer. thumbsup

I have to be a bit of a contrarian here. No doubt, no one ever had the technique that Buddy Rich had. For sheer, jaw dropping WOW factor, he was untouchable. Watching a guy play a roll with one hand is amazing. That bit where he rolls from the rim to the head is just incredible. But I think he is like the Yngwie Malmsteen of the drums. I would much rather hear Max Roach, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Gene Krupa, or any of a long list of guys drive a band.

And the Who would not have been The Who without Moon. Just like The Beatles would not have been The Beatles without Ringo.

Check out other drummers from that era...they all cook. Thinking about Louis Bellson, Ed Shaunnessy (sp), and the like. Hell even Gene Krupa . Just amazing chops.

As for Moon, and the comment "better band for it" is nonsense. If they'd had a "normal" drummer they would not have lasted one year past their first hit...The dynamic of those volitile personalities is what made the WHo NOT the "Pete Townsend Experience". I wish theWHo had hung it up after his passing like Led Zep did.

Apples and oranges, Buddy Rich is a true musician in every sense of the word, and Moonie was an insane rock drummer in every sense of the word.

ART BLAKEY!!! Right on!!

Fair enough but they could have been better as well. Name one song were Moon actually *grooves* or plays the same verse / chorus parts through out the whole song. He is just not my cup of tea and as I said I am a head to toes Who fan, have been all my life.

What I think is really funny is that you hit the nail on the head of my argument above. The reason you don't like Buddy Rich is because he is the Yngwie Malmsteen of drums meaning that he can play is a$$ off but he does not play for the song or groove like Art Blakey or Gene Krupa. Insert Keith Moon, take out the technical ability and you have my argument against him in a nut shell.

It's all good we all have likes and dislikes, we agree to disagree. No one is hurt by an opinion right?

Ok yeah, times were where he would flame someone or everyone around him for being less than he needed, which was an unending and unattainable level of precision.
He was possessed of something, because man... he never worked at it, never practiced... didn't even have a kit in his house. Was a ball buster with a funny as hell sense of humor so long as he respected you, which was never easy going in. Fascinating to watch him play though with that standard setup and nothing more than his own abilities.

That sh*t he pulled off where he "started the engine" on the snare and took it around the rim creating a flange effect, was nothing short of amazing. Buddy Rich is the man, no doubt about it. His late 60's and early 70's solo LPs were solid too.
