| Studer A810 Capstan Speed Problem I have been ressurecting a Studer A-810 that I've had for a while and I have a problem with the capstan motor maintaining a constant speed. This is a timecode deck and I just put a new Athan pinch roller on it as well. The capstan motor is speeding up and slowing down at an even rate that increases with tape speed. I can even look at the motor running from the back of the deck and see it changing speeds. It is a very even sine wave modulation, but it is making the deck useless obviously! Does anyone have experience with these decks out there? I have talked to several people here in the U.S. (Geaorge Athan and John French, but they are stumped.) I have a call in to Steve Smith in Nashville, but I have not heard from him yet. I figure some of you european guys might be more experienced with these decks. Some of you had suggested toggling each of the MANY DIP switches, but that hasn't helped. I was wondsering if since it is a timecode deck it might be looking for an external clock which is causing the capstan motor to hunt. ANY IDEAS? Danny Brown |

For us, it can mean something full of imperfection. Part of our aim has always been to destroy the sound in a beautiful way. It doesn't mean we expect everyone would like it. I'm not sure we will ever get there... but the whole point of making music is at least to aim at your own idea of perfection." -- Boards of Canada |
