I think Pennzoil is pretty good, but Quaker State is also a serious consideration. thumbsup

The resulting engine sound is very smooth, yet has a nice open top.

Ok, I think I know what you mean; High End Performance for the cheapest possible price

Mic Pre's and EQ's - Speck is pretty good cross section of value and high end performance. Portico is pretty great value as well. I have never used the Old School Audio stuff but it have heard some positive reviews on this site.

A/D/A Conversion - Lynx

Compressor - that is a tough one - all the good stuff is pretty much in the same range. I will let someone else take a crack at that. Maybe an RNC for certain applications might fit the bill

Mics - Charter Oak

Good luck in your search

Sounds like a Guitar Center dude is trying to sell you on a complete Behringer studio...and has everything in stock!
Just kiddin Brotha!!
Seriously though, it really depends on each piece of gear you are looking for....the brand names will change for every different catagory. Are you looking for mics? mixing board? effect proccesors? digital recorders?
What are you considering?
I think that some dudes here would like to help you out, if you can be a little more specific. There really is no "Cheapest High End Brand in general".
Take care-

Well as long as the person who was making the osa stuff that week knew what they were doing you'll be happy with the sound.

No, you big dumb ass....

I have no clue as to what you are asking about, in such a vague way!

You mention "4 figure price range" and that means 1000 to 9999 - a factor of ten

and you mentioned a price - $1,000 is a lot for a guitar cable, but not much for a hardware compressor.

Be more specific, and get yer head out of yer butt!

While I sort of know what you mean, as soon as I try to define it I can't. It's like asking :

Who is the least attractive beautiful girl?

What is the least expensive gormet meal?

What's the lowest performance high performance race car?

It's like trying to pin a badge on the most middle of the road average item that is just on the high end of the dividing line.

Machine, I think I recall that you seemed disappointed in another thread when you found out that mixers wanted to receive beats with the tracks separated instead of as a stereo loop. This thread is going to leave you disappointed yet again.

Surely if you think about it, you already must know the answer. That there isn't going to be one magical Brand Name someone can post for you that will save you the "trouble" of planning and equipping your studio. You strike me as looking for a shortcut around what I would consider the Best Part of what this site is all about.

Not only do most of the people here enjoy the Quest, I would go so far as to say we wallow in it. The "Slut" part of Gearslut. If you are not truly infected you may actually still have a chance to get away.

If you just want to spend money at one end and get a finished song out the other, building your own studio IS a huge chore. Seriously, just take your money to one of the fine hardworking studios in your area and pay them to record you.

joeq.....
loved your comment about "wallowing".
best insightfull comment ive heard in awhile.

machine ...."hi end" and what is "hi end" can be interpreted many different ways.
for example every piece of gear from a low end cassette deck with a 10 dollar
radio shak mic to a u87 running through a harrison console to a studer multitrack
has a sound. i feel pretty confident haveing once seen some pretty decent audio engineers at work (who helped me on more than one occasion and knew the craft inside out) .....that if technology had not progressed and all studios had to work with were cassette deck technology and mics we consider today as downright awfull these talented folks would still find a way to produce great records.
because they just have the knack of it. god i'm getting philosophical , but as an audio engineer said to me once in a big studio "audio is like love"...."many ways to do it". i see a lot of folks grasping today trying to get the "old sounds" from records years ago....that they love, and i would suggest sometimes (not always)
instead of reaching for the latest and greatest hi tech gear one might use some old tech. sometimes out of sheer obstinence i'll spend a day mucking with
an old mic plugged into a cassette deck and recording to the daw.
sometimes i seem to get the older sounds by mucking with this approach
(plus eq tailoring in the daw) than other approaches. or for laughs i might use a
element of a set of headphones as a mic to record a guitar amp for fun.
sometimes it works sometimes not. just some ideas. cos ive used some pretty hi end gear in the past which was wonderfull, but just not in all situations.
just an idea.

I think the better question is "which gear has the best VALUE?"

like i think, based on what people have said, the AT 4047, 4050, 4060 are really good values for their place in the industry.

i think that the apogee mini-me is one of the best values of all, especially now that they have lowered the MSRP. IMHO, unbeatable, now.

im not going to drop $3000 on an 8-channel A/D converter... i would pay $2000 if it was A/D D/A converter and damned good at both. i would not be interested in paying $1000 for an 8-channel A/D/A converter -- thats not the right price point for the quality I want. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I'm looking for value.. not always the cheapest price.

P.S. When its time for a new console, I will be buying a Midas Venice (not the cheapest, but def the best in that price range, IMO).
