Can someone Explain Side Chaining? Bass/w Bass Drum (waves)

My system, SX, Waves Musician Bundle

I want to know more about the technique of side chain compression and how to do it using it to make the kick and bass (guitar) work together plus any other side chaining examples.

Thanks.

PS. Any lead guitarist songwriters interested in working on some songs for tenative publishing/bouncing ideas off of via internet? We can split, discuss royalties, etc as it's better to have a % of something than 100% of nothing, meaning I am wanting to branch out and not work too much in seclusion. Thanks. Same for drummers/keyboard ala mix masters (those that can add that Smash Mouth/(darn, whats the name of the other band ? sounds like a boxer or something, or a althletic brand of clothing ..

My writing styles range from Lennon vibe to pop and dig vocal harmonys. My guitar playing is like green day to Blink to Radio Head, Pink Floyd, Nirvana and Everclear...and of course, the Beatles.

Just thought I would put it out there...

I worked at a record label, A&R, Soundtracks, etc, blaa blaa blaa...
thanks

I have always have a difficult time doing this in Logic with Waves plug ins. Can it be done on Cubase SX?

A Stereo compressor triggered by a sidechain?

Hi

Sidechaining is possible in SX with the Waves C1 compressor. Apologies for not typing this out again, and to the original author (a guy called ColinOOD over at the Cubase.Net forums.. I think)

There are a couple of plugs that will do this for you in Steinberg products as well.

1. Sidekick. It's free!!

2. DB-D Dynamics Processors. $39.00

Both are pretty cool and have different uses. I usually prefer one of my UAD-1 compressors to actually compress the bass... then I will use one of these units to create the ducking effect when I want it.... after the main compressor. Simple.. and works great.

You can sidechain kick into the bass compressor so that everytime the kick is hit, it ducks the bass guitar a little. If done correctly, it can tighten up their relationship.

I've been looking for info like this for a long time. Thanks, guys!

It's stuff like this that keeps Gearslutz great. (Too bad it's not about gear, though... )

This is what I was trying to figure out, so after reviewing the attachment, if it doesn't explain it enough, or if I get confused I will ask for further elaboration.

Thanks!

While we're at it, has anyone got a clue how to use & set up the sidechainer in the TC native bundle?

Feed your delay return through a compressor. Send your lead vocal to the comp's sidechain. The delay will stay out of the vocal's way until the end of a phrase and then fade in.
Feed some white noise into a noise gate, send the snare to the gate's sidechain input.
Feed your drum room mic through a gate, send snare & toms to the sidechain.
Feed a low sine wave (20-100 Hz) to a gate and send your kick to the sidechain. Try tuning the sine to the song's key (song in A: 55Hz)

You get the general idea. Go wild, have fun!

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with Cubase or Nuendo to be able to give you a thorough explaination of how to to it. If you had Pro Tools, that would be a different story.
Sorry if that wasn't any help
