Post your raw guitar samples!

Hey guys! I wanted to start a thread where people could post their raw guitar samples, both acoustic and electric.

I feel like this would be a HUGE help to the community because a lot of us get easily discouraged when we hear our raw guitars, yet have little to compare it to.

If you remember what signal chain you used to get that guitar tone and sound with no processing, please also post that! I feel like this thread can be very fun and informative so hopefully you guys post!

Though that's two parts in a lot of places, and it sounds like at least one splice, so not quite fair maybe according to the original rules.

Yes agreed - and who knows, probably Eq'd too

The splice is very obvious, but hey

but just wanted to share!

Hopefully this will be useful:

Audio clips of Proletarian's 20dB pad, Killer57 and Ultimate57 mods

Edit: the post above wasn't initially made for this purpose, but it does present some "raw" guitar and bass sounds.

Raw Guitars

I started the clip out by playing the entire mix, and then muted everything but the electric guitars.

Can anyone guess the signal chain?

The final mix of the song, and the entire EP can he heard here:

They sound like they are DI'd and run through an amp sim, or perhaps a direct out of an amp. I don't hear any hint of room or the characteristics of a real mic'd amp, though I'm not listening in the quietest environment so I could be missing it.

Sounds like a real amp to me, but I am not listening in the best environment right now, either.

My guess is a humbucker guitar into a distortion pedal and then into a tube amp. Close-mic'ed cab in a dead environment, or possibly a direct out from the head. I won't try to guess anything more specific than that. Sounds cool though!

Good ear! close dude,

Carvin with Seth Lover humbuckers> Big Muff Pi> Vox AC30> 57> Great River ME1NV. No EQ or compression on the raw signal.

Raw Guitars

OK, here ya go. I spliced together a few raw tracks from a session into one mp3. The first two samples are distorted guitars. The first one is two tracks and the second one is four tracks. The last part of the file is clean with total of five tracks. You can hear me soloing tracks just to show what the individual tracks sound like on their own.

There are no FX or EQ on these, other than whatever EQing I did before it hit the DAW (I don't remember if I did any EQing, but at any rate it was nothing extreme). You can also hear amp reverb on at least one of the tracks.

I will continue what a previous poster started and ask people to guess the chain. Guitar, pedals (if any), amps (or direct), cabs, mics, preamps, outboard, converters, whatever. Of course it will be almost impossible to get all of that stuff right, but it's fun to guess.

I started a thread a couple years back called something to the effect of "rough mixes from basics sessions" or somesuch. We had a fair amount of activity, including a number of (now probably embarrassingly bad-sounding) entries by yours truly.

Anyway, you can hear a lot of cool raw sounds, not just guitars. And one of the rules was to include thorough setup notes, so there are a lot of mic, pre, o/b examples to check out. See if you can't turn it up in a search

That, to me, also sounds like it could have been done just as well with an amp sim, because it has no real aspect of a mic'd guitar to me, as best I can hear. I don't hear any ambience or room in it.

Doesn't sound like an amp sim to me. It's probably close-mic'ed, maybe so close that the mic is touching the grill. Sounds like a humbucker into a high-gain tube amp like a Mesa-Boogie. Mic'ed with a dynamic like an SM57, maybe a Senn 421. I could be wrong, though. Like I said, it's going to be almost impossible to get the exact chain right.

not everyone likes the sound of a mic'd gtr amp. Sometimes the objective is to make it sound natural from the amp itself, and not like it's mic'd up.

not saying that's what this guy was going for but it sounds good.
I person dislike mic'd gtr tone., I think tracks sound better when you go for a more natural amp sound.

I didn't say it didn't sound good, just that it could have just as easily been done with an amp sim since there really isn't much of an amp mic'd in a room involved. It's certainly an interesting sound either way. As usual, differences in taste. I want it sound more like an amp in a space myself. I was going to post one of mine I recorded the other day but the horrible fizzy decay of the Night Train kind of counteracted the nice tone I got.

Screw it, here it is anyway. This is for a really languid, Stonesy type of thing I'm playing with just for fun. It's just a Night Train -> 1x12 with a Greenback -> Senn e609 -> Great River pre.

You'll probably notice this papery, fluttery distortion that I mentioned above. The good distortion is good but the decay on this amp has this wierd papery decay. It won't be this obvious in the song since this part with be lower in level in the context of the mix. But still, it bugs me.

I hear what you're talking about for sure. That fuzziness actually sounds cool in a vintagey kind of way. Could be a problem with more aggressive playing I guess, but sounds cool on this track.

Well, I'l be damned... I bought a Night Train a little bit before Christmas and that trailing fizz made me do some research on the cause and I found this thread. Dean, you might find this one interesting since the guys are going over the schematics and trying to find the cause and fix it:

Problem with this fizzy sound
