some real world uses for Analog Channel

Hello,

I purchased Analog Channel and have been messing around with it. It is very cool, but did you ever feel like you are only getting the tip of the iceberg?

I use AC1 on MIX BUSS for my master fader (adjusting to taste)
and the CONSOLE 1 setting for a lot of things (drums, guitar, bass)

but the AC2 plug is...I just don't think I am getting good results. I try to put it on guitars and the drum buss, (settings like McDSP states on their site) and just does not sound right...

Anybody what to what plugins they use (AC1,AC2)
on what tracks?
and maybe what to look for as far as setting AC2 properly for the different situations?

I know the typical answer will be..."use your ears" and I understand that, but I just wanted to maybe see how the typical user is applying the plugins.

Thanks,
Keith

There's some tutorials on McDsp's website that might be useful for you. As far as AC2, I use that on the Master Bus along with AC1. I turn the bump all the way up and try to find a sweet spot. When I find it, I usually turn the bump down until I like what I hear.

In addition to the master fader thing, I like AC1 as a first gain stage on Kick, snare and Bass. I get a little compression out of it and boost the signals to ~ -10dBFs. Then (sorry AC2 -- I actually have not used AC2 yet so can't say how it would work :-)) I usually put these into Cranesong Phoenix (gets more color with a hotter signal) and use Phoenix to get the right vibe for the particular track.

YMMV,

Thanks guys, yes..I did check out the tutorials, but it seemed the "settings" that they displayed did not really sound good...almost "too much-overkill" kind of thing...

I'll have to check out the AC2 on the master....do you have any favorite "tape choices" (USA, etc...)

I use AC1 on everything that needs a little nudging in terms of compression or shaping. It isn't a very good compressor on higher ratios, but when you just need something to sit a little better, I find it quite useful and have made my own presets that I use as starting points. I generally don't mess with the factory presets much.
You can also take advantage of the soft limiting and drive the input for some subtle distortion on drum busses and the like.

AC2 can be cool as more of an eq than anything else. I use slower tape speeds on harsher stuff to mellow out the transients and I sometimes bus the kick and bass through it to shape the low end a bit.
