Thread Starter | Quick rundown of the 414 types...
A friend of my dad's has a pair of 414's that he used for classical recording on about eight or ten occasions. He has no idea which 414's they are, as the purchase was recommended by someone more experienced than himself. They're about ten years old. He's gonna bring 'em by so I can see them. He wants $300 each and they're supposedly in immaculate condition (knowing this guy, I believe it.) He said I could keep them for a week and make sure I want them, but the money's pretty low, so I'd rather buy 'em straightaway. But I don't know much about the various 414 designations. Just wondering if someone can give me a quick edumacation in 414's. Anything to stay away from? Thanks! Max |

Nothing to stay away from for $300 bucks! It goes- (from oldest to newest) 414 EB Silver Body with Brass C-12 cap (later ones also had the glued 'white ring' cap) 414 EB 'P48' Black body (this is the least desirable IMO, but certainly worth $300) 414 ULS 414 TL 414 TL II 414 B XL II 414 B XLS

Those things make incredible drum overheads. I've cut tons of lead vocals with those mics too. | |
