Why can't I play all the tracks in Cubase ?

Hi All,

I transfered 20 tracks in wav. form to Cubase SX. Everything was going well until I tried to play back the 20 tracks. The little window under VST Performance showed that the disk was overloading.

How can that be ? No effects, plug-ins or anything and that disk meter was up to "100" as soon as I hit "play"?

Does anybody know what's going on...?

Thanks...

Umm... that is an impossible question to answer without knowing the specs on your computer, what size files they are (bit/sample rate), the sound card, the buffer settings, etc, etc, etc..

Also... have you tried the Cubase forum??? You do have to be registered user to post for help there though...

Is it a general playback problem or does it overload at a certain track count?

set your buffer size of the sound card to the highest value
also set the audio priority to 'very high' priority in cubase.
you many need a faster hdd. 10k rpm or higher

Hi Guys,

I've spent God knows how many hours on this the last couple of days...

I transfered a 20 track song from a 2480 to Cubase SX, everything was going fine until I got to about 16 to 20 tracks. As soon as I loaded all 20 tracks, the little 'disk' meter in the VST Performance window was all the way up to 100 and the red light was on. It didn't even let me play 10 seconds of the song, the audio cut out and the meter overloaded.

I tried everything...I took the folder out of my main drive "C" and dumped it on the slave drive thinking that it would definitely solve the problem. No...same thing again with the f***** overload meter.

I have a PC running Pentium D with dual core processors at 2.8ghz with 2ghz of RAM. This shouldn't be happening !!! I know guys with less performance who are running 40+ tracks without a problem !

I have to deliver this song mixed and all by Saturday to this Publisher who is presenting it to some people at Sony. This is a big deal for me and I'm getting real desperate because nobody seems to know what's going on....

Can somebody help me on this one, I don't know what else to do !

It's hard to really troubleshoot without being in front of your computer. Is this the first time you've tried transfering from the 2480 to Cubase? Are you new to Cubase and maybe something is wrong in your setup? It's definitely not anything to do with your system which should be able to handle way more then that.

Since you're on a deadline I would stop trying to figure it out and start from scratch. Open up a new song, transfer one at a time and see what happens. You said it was working up until about 16 tracks. Maybe do the opposite and start deleting tracks until it works again? You could also try burning the files to a CD and upload them from that.

I'm in Plantation. Not down the road but if it's an emergency and you think I can be of any assistance let me know. I use Cubase and have the original 1680. I'm here all day tomorrow, you're welcome to come by or give a call.

what vers. of sx? what sound card on your laptop? what's a 2480? have you been using sx without any probs like this before? Really need more info. I would talk with Yoni seeing he is willing to help you out over the phone.

Well, it may be too late to mix and deliver the project but I finally figured it out...

First of all, I've only been using Cubase for about 3 weeks so I wasn't familiar with it. Anyway, this is what happened.

I had a 20 track song that I imported from a VS2480 into SX, but couldn't play anything over 14 tracks.dfegad

I posted earlier about moving the folder to another drive in the PC and that still didn't work. The disk meter was overloading still... BUT, what I didn't do when I dumped the folder in the other drive was dump the AUDIO FILE as well !

So... the whole time I was playing the song it was still overloading the disk because the audio file was still playing of off Drive C, the main drive !

Lesson Learned....once I did that, there was no more problems and the disk meter didn't even show a bar on it... I celebrated this discovery with a nice drink because it took me a lot of time to figure this out...

Anyway, I had to learn the rookie way and I missed a deadline on a project, but what can you do...

I just wanted to thank the guys who tried to help and for anybody else who might encounter this. If you have a large project, dump it on the other drive (if you have one) and carry the audio folder with it !

I can't imagine running SX with only one HD, it would be depressing...

Just a little info...

See ya all soon,
