I used to live in North Providence, off of Mineral Spring Ave... what a town, what a time!!

Played all the hot clubs (both of them), ate out afterwards at Haven Bros. with the hookers and the winos - killer lobster roll and baked beans!

Had the "This Car Climbed Federal Hill" bumper sticker, and was a card-carrying member of the Buddy Cianci Fan Club. That wasn't enough to allow me to stay though - after two years, they made me leave after they found out that I wasn't Italian.

Not far at all. Nice town. Not Providence, but not Johnston or Cranston either!

The units look great. EQ sounded great on the material we were trying out. I wasn't at the Santa Barbara one but the LA meeting so I didn't get to hear the preamps and thats one thing that I'd really like to hear are some comparison clips between the tonelux, API, some neves, and others just to get a feel for it. But from listening to everything they've got planned for this company and sound and build quality I'm going to be purchasing some hopefully very soon.

Atleast a stereo pair of pres and eqs to start and slowly build up from there.

It's top notch stuff

A friend of mine and I tested out a small 8ch Tonelux summing rig yesterday. It was much better than I had imagined, and I was expecting great things.

The most striking observation is the depth of the soundstage when summing in the Tonelux rig. The tracks regained the feel of the theater where we tracked the drums.

My friend immediately ordered a 16 ch rig with 8 pres, 8 eqs and more! I think Paul might be onto something, or on something, I'm not sure which.

Like he said:

"The last time I heard a piece of gear that made tracks sound more musical was when I was working on an old Neve 8068. This week, engineer Bill Plummer and I demoed a Tonelux rig. We set-up and listened to tracks through the Tonelux MX2 modules into the Tonelux mix bus, and whatever we put into it sounded much better. Every instrument and vocal went from a two-dimensional image to a three-dimensional image, sounded bigger and more musical just by putting the Tonelux modules in series. When we used the Tonelux modules as a full mix bus, everything sounded better, without any EQ or compression.

I’m ordering a Tonelux console today, and I will be mixing “out of the box” from now on. Thanks Paul! You’re on to something special.

Paul Reed Smith"

I really enjoyed the LA demo. I have a 16 channel system with 6 mic pres, and I was thrilled to check out the motorized faders and eqs. will be order a couple eqs next week hopefully (buy my gear in the classified!) faders felt awesome. Thanks so much to Gil and Ryan for making the demo possible. And of course thanks to Paul for desigining such a great sounding system!

I have to say thanks as well because that was a great experience getting a hands on test with these instead of only being able to hear what everyone is saying and doing a blind order. Those eqs were great, though i really wish i could have heard the pres and done a few comparisons with some other high end pres.

Anybody want to do a shoot out between some tonelux, API, neve, and some other boutiques?

Thanks ryan for letting us invade your studio time. (I can't wait for that album to be out).

And thanks Gil for taking the time to set that up for us. If only more companies would work in developing the product with the people that will be purchasing and using it. As soon as I get some extra funds i'l be giving you a call. Only problem is with all those different configurations i can't figure out what i want first!!!

Woh what setup did paul reed smith get? 2 pres, 8 channel inputs and some fx returns for summing it looks like? perhaps 2 strips of aux access busses?

He is holding the demo rack, he is ordering a 16 channel system with 8 EQs and 8 Mic pres, with a 5.1 control room monitor system and 8 Fx2 modules to do the sends and the rear/center/lfe summing. I've know Paul for 20 some years, and I must say the look on his face is genuine. He was shocked at how it made things sound. He drove down to my house, took it back and returned the same day with his decision. He is not a man that fiddles around...

As far as a shoot out, I would be interested, but only for others to compare and pick what they like. I think each of us have a certain tone, so comparing apples to oranges wouldn't really have a winner, but it would allow listeners to make a choice as to their direction. For example, if you compared Tonelux to Dangerous, if you liked the color that I add, the D would sound to clean. If you like a clean sound, the T would have too much distortion. I would like to do it just so all of us designers could have a good dinner and have some drinks. I really like hanging with all of them.

Well thats what i was kinda after. I know each of us has our own sound or tone we like...I still haven't tried enough gear to decide on my own sound yet and thats why i think it would be really cool to say, mic up a drum set, record a 30 second clip using 4 or 5 different pres so we can get a glimpse of the little nuances that each pre has. Or a vocal take, acoustic guitar, heavy rhythm guitar, Bass DI. need i go on?

I forget what website it was but somebody a couple years back did a mic pre shootout with a bunch of engineers and had published a cd. lost all my old data on my last computer and wishing i had that link.

I think i'm done with clean pres. Atleast have 2 or 4 laying around but i want something with a little more rounded or beefyness...heck even some grit when i want to get that.

Perhaps this one...

Perhaps you mean this mic pre shootout cd:

Tons of discussion about it on this and other forums.

Cheers.
