Since I published this in 2002, I've been off and on wanting one and tracking prices. You'd see some go for around $600 back then. Now it seems to be about $1,600. Supposedly in the 1990s you could find them for under $100.

I was gonna say around $1,200. Have they really climbed upto $1,600 in the past year? Bummer. Great machine, but at a certain point if it continues to rise so quickly, it won't be worth doing any more. Glad we already have one.

On the subject of Gates, what about the Level Devil?

I've been looking for one for quite some time, and have been keeping my eye on them on ebay. The prices have definitly been creeping up and they go for $1600 right now. Fairly steep for what they are. Great unit though.

You will probably have to rebuilt it and then finding the best 6386 tube will be a bitch.

This will hike up the price.

On my modified STA-Level i switch the tube based on tonal application.

My tech is right now building and designing a modern Sta-Level for the masses.

It won't be built around the 6386 but it will still rock as well.

I've got a Sta Level...that a friend is helping me rebuild right now...
Finding the 6386...is a nuisance...thank god there's only one.
And when you do find one on ebay...you practically need boxing gloves
to get it...
