Amp sims - I own a line 6 POD for years, but never liked it much. I recently gave it away for a good cause. I also have had a zoom PS02 that gets less use. I have a boss DR880 for a little practice setup, that only gets used for headphones or mobile stuff. I've had the various Amp Farm versions over the years, still haven't used them much. They just sound like crap to me. I demo'd a couple others that I don't care enough about them to buy them. I really gave up on Waves when WUP came in and the annual fees bugged me. As much as I dislike amp sims, and Waves, I tried the GTR 2 and must say it surprised me. In some ways I can see using this instead of mic'ing an amp. It has a cool vibe that wold work better than amp depending on the song. It also can do pretty good in a bunch of different style. As much as I didn't want to spend the $$$ on Waves, I did. I'm running a few pedals (Zvex SHO and Klon) into a 63 reverb tank, into a 55 Pro with a THD hot plate and the hot plate goes line out to either a TG2 or Avalon U5. I like the GTR a direct or slight over drive. I like the ability to split channels to stereo and play with different cabinets and mics. I actually got a sound that it useable, unlike any other simulator I've tried. I still will mic the amp, but it will work very well for bed tracks (in some ways better), some leads and great for writing and demos. My work is around, acoustic, folk, blues, jazz. I have no use for the super distorition boxes. My preference is clean, to overdrive. My amps I gig with (depending on the gig) are a 59 bassman (original not a reissue), a 55 Pro, a 65 Super Reverb, or blues jr. So my tastes are more to vintage Fender, rather than Marshall or Mesa Boogie. It's such a subjective thing... but I decided to pull the trigger.... |
