Bass amp suggestions for mic'ing.

I want to put a bass amp in my home studio that would be good for mic'ing the cabinet. I mainly do older rock/funk...think john p. jones - j. jamerson - chuck r. - etc... I was thinking about getting and old flip top but I am not a bass player so I don't have a long list that I am knowedgeable about. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian DuNard

Absolutely a vintage B15 ampeg...
I"ve got a '66 fliptop that's incredible. It's got a vintage JBL in it instead of the original speaker and it's the best I've ever heard. Records and sounds like a monster.

Yes, yes, and yes . . . . indeed! thumbsup

That is if you can't find a Trace Elliot Creamsicle series combo.

And in case you can't afford the flip top, the b100r is actually an excellent sounding solid state combo with a 15 speaker that is very affordable.
Wonderful for recording.

I don't suggest this as a first choice since the Ampeg B15 is really the deal but...I checked out one of their newer solid state bass amps today. It was a 200 watt model with a 15 inch speaker and I was suprised at how good it sounded.

I cannot say anything about its recording virtues other than I have never heard solid state produce the type of harmonic and dynamic range of tubes particularly with stringed instruments.

I only mention this because a used or reissue B15 will be expensive.

By the way, does anyone remember the B25. I had one years ago and I rarely see them but it was a great amp. I used it - get this - with my Farfisa organ. I believe i added an outboard reverb and is sounded great. I wish I had kept all that old gear. Oh well.

Good luck.

I guess I will start to look around here (Nashville) for a B15 to try. I saw that one went on ebay for $510.00. Does this sound like the going rate? I will also check out a newer one. Thanks for the tips!

A B15N with a JBL D130 is a truly beautiful thing. All hail Harvey Gerst.

Not vintage or boutique but I have an Ampeg svt 350 and a SWR 4x10 that sounds killer. I'm sure the gearsnobs will say it sucks but whatever.
