Neve 1073LB 48V hum?

Hi,
I got my 1073LB two weeks ago and I use it with an A-Design 500HR Rack.
First the slot was too narrow so I had to file a littlebit to make the 1073 fit into the 500HR rack. So please don't use this two components together, although the A-Design rack really looks good and is built very very well.

The 1073LB sounds great with my tube mics and the ribbons but when I turn on the 48Volts phantom power first a loud hum starts and becomes lower but stays there.
Does anyone of you have this problem too with the 1073LB???

thanks
robert

Got the 1073lb for try out today, after waiting on it for three weeks. I agree, it won't fit in the 500HR without modification. The unit seems to fit, the screws that hold it together don't (the screws catch on the slot rim). I don't see myself filing on a brand new unit. Sending it back tomorrow and since I couldn't compare or try it, I can't give you information on the hum. Doesn't sound healthy though...

Cheers Philip.

I also considered to send the 500HR back but what I wanted was a 19" rack. So you know what happens when you've got a 10 slot rack and only two slots are full........

I wonder if it would fit into the EL or Avedis racks...?

No, definitely not the Avedis R52. Already tried.

Is it because of the aluminum case around the 1073lb?
I mean, would it fit without the case, or is it the components sticking out that does it..?

Most tube mics have their own power supply and don't require 48V phantom. Most Ribbon mics do not take phantom either, unless they are something like one of the Royer designs with an active preamp. It sounds like yo uare using your equipment incorrectly. Be careful with your ribbon, under certain patching conditions, you can destroy your mic with 48V active.

**EDIT** I may be misreading your post, saying that it sounds great on ribbons and tubes, but when using 48VDC on other condensers, the problem exists? Sorry if I'm jumping the gun on my previous assumption that your using 48V on tubes and ribbons. Do you have other 500 series pres? It could be a power supply issue which would evidence itself on other preamps too. If you have a multimeter, check that the voltage is symmetric on pin 1 to 2 and 1 to 3.

Aluminum casing for sure will be a no-go. Though even without it, I'd imagine the unit to still be too bulky to fit.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to think that it would be nice to try and compile a database of what will fit in what when it comes to the 1ru racks.

Hmm... odd as I have had both the R52 and the 500HR at various points. I found 3 or 4 pres that wouldn't work (or physically fit) in the 500HR but ALL of those worked in the R52 perfectly... they were mostly custom racked things no commercial models

Thanks for the head's up though.
