Finding vocalists online - collaboration sites?

What would be the best place to find vocalists online? By this I don't mean enthusiastic people who likes to sing, but people who knows how to sing.

I am by no means an amateur in music production, and while I personally sing like a drunk panda (can be useful at times) - I know bad from interesting.

The best way is of course to meet up with the singers face to face, but after working in a couple of projects where the tone-deaf people I've been working with lately, I feel I never want to open up Melodyne one more time in my life and even less try to explain why the hell it's not working.

I have no problems with divas - in fact, bring them on. As long as they can sing. Where to look? Has anyone had a successful collaboration online, or is it just one of those things that looks good in theory, but rarely work out in practice?

/C

And sometimes you can be lucky and find singers hanging at gearslutz!

CarLofgren: Can I ask what your level of consideration is? (professional recording work or amateur production).

If its a straight paid gig, you can specify what types of singers you are looking for here, and I'm sure there are some here that can match your requirements and will contact you privately.. or at least put you on to their resources, but if you have money to spare then do a google for "singers online" and you'll find exactly that...

I guess then it's a crap-shoot for talent (isn't it always?) but demos should be available to help your decision making whatever agent you use.

If you are looking for talent on a project-budget level, then you're probably back to "wants to sing" rather than "can sing". A decently described and implemented project can help, but most decent vocalists have been burned a few times by the "pay you later when the deal is signed" type projects, and want their money up front.

Anyway, please feel free to shoot me a mail with more info about your project (male vocalist here, released album and demos available) and good luck with it!

Cheers,

Mike in Norway.

Interesting... I think it'd be a great idea to have a forum here on GearSlutz where you can say "Looking for a singer" or "Looking for a guitarist" or whatever... like a collaboration forum!

Then say you had a question like this one... us singers could just post a clip of us singing for you ...

I can sing btw... really sing.

I must say that I was hugely surprised by the response here. Wow. Usually I hang out over at Kvr and I'm so used getting stupid responses that I practically expect them. But this? Kind people already offering their services - I am humbled to say the lest. Thank you!

As Mike was touching in his reply, I guess it all comes down to the level you're setting for the project - and most of all, what kind of money you are willing to put down on it.

I've been in the collaboration game for so long that I didn't really think about even paying for it. When we get money, I always split it right off. But this might be an approach that have served its purpose well in my earlier days - but during the last years I've sort of felt I'm wasting my time on people with more passion than talent - or even the will to learn how to control their voices (I don't know how many people I've met with voices full of character - but they don't lift a finger to actually learn how to sing - they just seem to think their voices are the sound of god or something). But by actually hiring people you avoid this problem. Weird that I didn't think of this myself - must been that I've been too rooted in my way of working.

Again. Thanks for all the replies - it made me see in new shapes and colours, and that's always a good thing. I need to think.
