getting rid off all computers. help me with a setup

i have no problem saying i am a social network, internet addicted drone. im a knowledge addict. and it's killing my creative side. i know all these things can be used in the right way. but it's like its my black hole,my crack cocaine. i could just kill the internet and keep my rig. but i just want to not have a computer in my life for awhile.

in the last month i have started working with a outside studio.
if i sell my P.T. rig. (i will keep my outboard pres hamptone, neve portico) i could afford a used radar 24 and decent board. a&H zed, toft?
But that may be overkill for what i need.or any of the all in one boxes from korg, roland, boss akai. i would use outboard converters if i went that way. i don't use alot of tracks.

i have started cutting in stereo or mono live no overdubs for my vocals and acoustic guitar at home. the aea r44 has changed my life. then i take it to my friends commercial studio.(he uses a roland vs-2480) but i hate those things. and does some great stuff, but uses outboard converters pre's etc.) he overdubs upright bass and pedal steel/dobro. and we bring in a drummer. i take it back home and cut electric guitar tracks. and any overdubs. we mix both places. it'd very roots oriented stuff so it works. even though im working at another studio. i will always want some type of recorder here.

im sure some will take shot's at me. thats to be expected, but im really burnt. like someone on a bing commercial. i just need a great all in one recorder. thanks to all.

I don't have advice for you in terms of getting your computer out of your setup. However, can you live with unplugging your web access? Can you limit your setup (especially plug ins) to something reasonable? Can you convince yourself that your space (not just the computer but the room you are in) is just for work? If so, you don't have to deal with moving on.

Many people ask me why I use software rather than hardware as I made a bunch of music with hardware. It may be weird to others but I sit in front of a computer all day for work, and have had many jobs like this. Even browsing the web, I am seeing what is going on with trends, I do web marketing. A computer means business, even this post, though casual, it's a test of what people say to you, so I can see what people think. It's not because I like to do this, my brain is programed like that so that makes using a computer very condusive to my focus.

I am just saying, your perspective may be "changeable" and allow you to do what you need, just realize what is work and what isn't.

this is not a knee jerk reaction. i am in front of a computer alot at work every day also. i just see myself doing better things. like music, reading books. getting work done. focusing on stuff. a computer used right is a great tool. but i feel like im always checking email, text,fb. if a thought or question comes into my mind i must find the answer. it's not good for me.

It is because most of us have become totally addicted to constant change and the need for shiny new objects in web form, short attention span for sure.Your right it is like crack cocaine , I saw a girl in the mall sitting down left hand on her cell talking , the right hand playing an ipad game , totally sad . I think I am one the few that dont have a cell phone still - lol . It boils down to discipline , we all need to step up to the plate and be men . Time is short and precious use it wisely , in the snap of my or your fingers a year is gone and what have you accomplished ? DO a test and see if you can go half a day without checking online stuff. Master your flesh many are in the same boat . It kind of makes me sad when i record bands and they are constantly checking the phone texts , meanwhile they are spending money on studio time . hmmm maybe i'll make a new studio rule , leave all phones at the front desk , and tough it out - lol . heck the old rule was no drugs or booze .

As a side note just got an email from IZ corp - the radar stuff is on sale ! email em for a qoute . All the best with yours and many others struggles

hmmm I think i need to stop checking out GS as much myself - conviction here as well

Go with the Radar - you won't regret it! You def. need the Session Controller, but you will not need the meter bridge.

And good luck! We have all sorts of DAWs here, but personally, I just use the Radar. Everything else is just too much faffing about for me!

This was a mutual pain.

After working with earlier versions of Soundscape/Cubase Audio and Logic & ProTools Mix Systems, I moved back to standalone 24 track Hard-Disk Recorders for Recording. As The Byre said .. "Too much Faffing" .. I have 3 machines in 2 rigs (Fostex/Alesis). I've switched into doing a lot of live-recording and remote access projects. I've stayed working with analog consoles. I'm just not a fan of tracking sessions into computers.

With standalone recorders, I tend to utilising my senses, most of what I've learnt, and I focus much more on what I'm hearing. Not what I'm seeing. There are still ways of working and dealing with the discipline and limitations of 24 or 48 tracks total. I've also broken bad habits that I was developing working with DAW's.

We all still need computers around, but I've aimed to only do certain tasks on them. I keep 1 computer offline for transfers/editing/ and Mixing (>Lightpipe>M-Audio Lightbridge >Computer) Mainly through consoles. I run a 2nd computer for internet access and file sharing off to the side. I use the computers a whole lot less and projects come together and happen quicker.

We all sometimes need to take time off the net. Do it. I frequently have to wean myself off the internet for periods of time.

Good Luck with your choices.

That's exactely what I do right now - ADT 5MT 40 channel inline console and Radar II - not yet finished but not far from the first takes.

Due to an UFC-24 I can record into a PC parallel to the Radar but the system works solely standalone

My favorite !~ Have one in every studio -- they keep you from being too burn out ..closest to moving from a simple tape setup. No PC/Mac in any of our studios {we mix to Masterlinks } >> since the late 80's

For around $500 used :: hard to find a fader/automated ~ 48 channel DAW -- & we use mainly external gear --all digitally I/O
