Chandler Limited Little Devil 500 pre

Hi All-
2011 will be a busy year for new Chandler Limited products. We have four new items in the works and will be releasing them in short order.

Next we will have two 500 pre amps. The Little Devil 500 pre and, because of high demand, a reissue of the Germ 500 pre.

The Little Devil has a wide variety of sounds and controls including feedback, impedance, low cut, bright, direct input, gain, and output. It also has both mic and line inputs so it can be used in mixes to reprocess tracks, or as a color box wherever line level is being used. It has one of the warmest pre amps sounds I have made but remains firm and has great color and character. The Class A gain section loves to be driven and more than any of my other pres sounds better as you drive it. Feedback control offers a great variety of tone. The DI is excellent on this one as well, and I feel this is my best pre amp yet and hope to see good things from it!

******** One very important note on both of the new 500 units. The setup of the power has been changed and we have eliminated any known power conflicts with 3rd party racks and lunchboxes *************** You will no longer have current limit issues with some versions of the API lunchbox or with BAE 11 slot racks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes,
Wade Goeke
Chandler Limited

Any plans for the pre in a standard 1RU for us non-500 folks?

Sounds tasty

Wow, all this new Chandler stuff looks great, and this Little Devil Pre is particularly enticing (moreso since I am shopping for a pre at the moment).

Couple of questions:

When will this be available?

How will its character compare to the Germanium pre? (I've rented the Germanium a couple of times so that's what I'm familiar with).

Hi Wade,

I love the TG Channel and the classic tone. Will the new pre's tone be similar at all to it or are you planning an Abbey Road pre in the 500 format? BTW, the low cut is a great feature. thumbsupthumbsup

Looks like about 2 months for availability since we are putting out 4 new things at once. We're trying to cut that down.

Its an interesting combination of tones. Its got the warmth of the Germ and the "brightness" of the TG. The input stage is total class A high volatge and very high current while the output is class AB. So you kind of get the best of all. The warm sqush of the class A front and the firmness of the cvlass AB output. The feedback is very effective on it and since it has the output control (not on the germ) you can drive both. The input stage loves to be driven and it can be very colored of or quite pristine in a Class A vintage sort of way. Distortion goes from .005% with the feedback low to who knows what when driven :-) The clipping is very soft on it so as I said it loves to be pushed!

66db gain with feedback up and gain on full. Minimum gain is 15db in mic mode. To use as a line processor you simply hit the line toggle. You still have plenty of gain to pound stuff in line mode though :-)

Its a classic tone but probably different than the TG or Germ. It has qualities of both of them but I think take the sounds even further. It has the brightness and aggressiveness of the TG but the thickness of the Germ...

I think I would term it as a new sound that you cant really get with either of the others....? You guys will have to let me know!

Where is the mic / line selection? on one pic, it seems the silk screening is missing. on the other pic, it looks like there are two 48V controls, one on a button and the other on a toggle.

Well since they are protos...

I'm going to throw out an idea that I had when I first saw them. Leave the 48V and PHASE on toggles... use the push buttons for the same 3 position selectable HPF like you have on the LD EQ thumbsup

What if you plan on buying the Pre and the EQ, though, wouldn't that be a little redundant?

It would but the benefits would far outweigh the overlap especially since you are not sacrificing ANY of the preamp features in order to add them - THE LD Pre already has a toggle for HPF, I'm just suggesting utilitzing the pushbuttons to tie the pre in to the existing LD theme (plus the freqs on the LDEQ are super useful thumbsup)

You might have a rack of the pres, less likely a rack of the EQs to go along... plus this would free up the EQ for other things that might need more than just HPF... just for the record, I DO already own Little Devil EQ and it is amazing but i would LOVE to have the HPF on the pre as well.

That's my two cents.

Im with you on all that...I just kind of rolled along with the design and thats how it can out. The filter circuit form the eq is somewhat complicated and would raise the price so that was probably some of my thought on that...Also I felt that it changed the character of the pre when more circuitry was added in....
