Thread Starter | Won't Get Fooled Again Organ Does anyone know what type of organ Pete was playing on the Who's "We Won't Get Fooled Again"? It sounds kinda' Hammond like. It is distorted and sounds like a tube distortion. I have never figured out if he was using a repeat effect and playing the changes along withe repeat or if he was banging the part out manually. There is a gliss at one point towards the end. That organ part assured that no cover band could pull that song off. This included The Who, too! Danny Brown |

| I just read somewhere recently which organ was used....and now I can't recall. Helpful, aren't I? It was a Hammond....I think they said it was an A100. From there it sounds like it's run through an LFO (I know he used his guitar through an Arp 2600 on later tracks.....don't know if the organ was run through the 2600) for the gating "pulse" effect |

| Gearslutz.com admin | There is a great 'The making of Who's next' documentary where he shows you what made the sound... He played the sequencer live, so the random notes and changes ARE created by his one hand chord shapes.. So it is a live take "journey" - the variations are his and played where he felt they should happen.. It might be on a DVD.. In fact.. here it is.. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...v=glance&n=130 The songs and story of the Who's classic album. Who's Next is viewed by many as the greatest testament to the songwriting talent of Pete Townshend and the musical power of the Who. When the album was released in 1971, it climbed to the Top 5 on the Billboard chart and remained in the Top 40 for five months. The story of how the Who came to record the album is told by group members Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle, together with contributions by those who were close to the group during this recording, also providing insight into the importance of the late great Keith Moon to the success of the Who. The songs recorded for the Who's Next album are featured here, including such classics as "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Baba O'Riley," and "Behind Blue Eyes." Included in this documentary program are previously unseen performances of songs from the album that prove the longevity and lasting appeal of "Who's Next," a true classic album. 61 minutes.

| Gear nut | I saw Dream Theater cover this with Queensryche a few years back, and they did an amazing job, Jordan Rudess is the man when it comes to sound design, plus he uses Kurzweil keyboards with V.A.S.T. techonology. -Roy |

There's also a great scene where Roger is at the console playing back "Behind Blue Eyes" and talking about Moony's drumming; soloing his tracks, etc. As I recall he has his reading specs on and is displaying a great "hunt n' peck" approach to the magical array of esoteric faders and buttons of the board! ho ho. | |

Thread Starter | the A100 into the ARP seems like something I have heard before The Lowrey Organ idea might come from the fact that they have that gatey, pulsing effect. It is just one of those how did they do that parts on a record that has always interested me. Like.... what is the effect on "I AM IRONMAN?" It almost sounds like a rotary head. That's what they used to make HAL9000 get lower and lower in pitch as he was shut down by Dave. Rambling aren't I? Danny Brown |
