I was wondering if it's possible use my akai s3000 A/D's for monitoring...

... if so I'd like to know if the are any good or better than the digi002 rack.

any advice?

I have used my 3000xl on occasion as AD and DA. There is a certain Akai sound which works well on beats etc. My aural memory tells me it was better than Digi but only 16 bit.

Thanks!

16 bit.... hmmm... I see a problem there. What;s the max sample rate on the Akai s3000?

Back in the days when I used my 3200 in anger (original 3200 - it wasn't cheap when I bought it in '93...) I found the stereo outs had extra "air" you didn't get with the individual outs...

Upon checking the manual, I discovered that the stereo main outs are 18-bit, whereas the individual outs are 16-bit...

Even though my 3200 was a pre-takeover unit made in Japan, its sound quality was never something to write home about IMO - the S6000 I had was the same: brittle and boring. I sold the 6000 and kept the 3200 purely to prepare sounds for the MPC3000.

If the 3000 sounds better than the digi, that's cool, but "audio nirvana" it certainly ain't IMHO.

48k isn't it? I know it handles 44k and 22k, but can't recall exactly. It definitely doesn't go above 48k.

I should add that the 3200's circuitry is the same as the 3000; the differences are in the interfacing options, and that the 3200 came with a whopping 8Meg of memory!

J

edit: I'm pretty sure it's just 44k and 22k - memory's not what it used to be!

So you guys reckon that it is a bit pointless trying to use the S3000 as D/A for monitoring? Or might make an improvement against the DIGI002?
