Does anyone know of an effect which will...

let you map a parameter to the volume of the incoming signal?
e.g. "Pan": sing softly and it's panned more to the left; sing louder, it pans more right...or play a guitar chord hard and it starts on the right and as it dies down the pan drifts left in proportion to the volume.
My friend says a PCM80 will do it, but I don't believe it. If so, how?

Some of T.C. Electronic's units allow you to control effect parameters with pitch, volume, etc. My old TC G-Force did it, and I'm sure there are several other units with similar functionality.

The Panman plug from SoundToys should do the job.

Btw there's a great track called The Willhelm Scream from a guy called James Blake which makes use of some crazy vocal panning like that. I'm on my phone so I can't find the link...

Thanx, but I wasn't referring to that specifically - just using it as an example. What I want is the ability to map any parameter to incoming volume (in hardware).

Any truth to the idea that a PCM80 could do it?

Yes, you can program any parameter of a PCM80 to be dynamically modulated by strapping an envelope follower to the input. It's fairly common...this is how a "ducked delay" works. The threshold setting will determine the depth/width/dynamics of the effect. The aftermarket Pitch FX card has several examples of this type of effect.

Eventide Harmonizers also do this. There are dynamic tremolos, panners, delays, etc. saved as factory presets.

Reaper's parameter modulation would do that. Not sure 'bout on the way in though. ..Software though.

Thanx, but my understanding of the ducked delay is that it only responds to the audio input crossing the "threshold" level that you set, thus triggering the compression. I'm wondering if, for example 100 different volumes will produce 100 different pan positions (or delay lengths...or whatever...)

Yes, you can create multiple values. Even the output of a ducked delay can be scaled to dynamically change in inverse proportion to the input level. It doesn't have to be a noise gate that switches completely on/off depending on crossing a threshold.

Thanx. Good 2 know.

Any chance you can track a parameter to pitch as well?
