Avalon 737

sorry not sure why my last post never came through

I ordered an Avalon 737 a few months ago only to find out it wasn’t working, so I retuned it and got my replacement today yet again to find out it too wasn’t working properly . I’m guessing this is from a faulty batch and I having waited 3 months for a replacement has really pee’d me off. So I think I’ll cut my losses and ask for a refund, but I really require a good quality amp, so what are the alternatives to the Avalon 737? I only have £1400 to spend, by the way. I need a good pre that’s suitable for recording Rap and r&b, thanks for any help given..

In case any one asks what the problem was with both pre's... well i kept getting this humming sound and some static sound whenever I turned the knobs, I did remove the ground link but that made no difference and my cables were fine as they worked perfectly with my older pre.

I don't know whats going on at Avalon. We ordered a pair of 2055's MONTHS ago and still nothing. The dealer says he has a 737 that just arrived from an order 4 months ago that was cancelled as the wait was too long. the 737 arrived to them with no word of shipment or anything, just one day a delivery from Avalon. Something's going on over there, but who has the inside info?

Have a word with KMR in north London. They'll have lots of options for you...

they're a good bunch, and normally let you try stuff out - the surest way to find something you like

a sweetwater rep told me they moved their manufacturing to Australia. I waited weeks for mine and it works but I have a bad feeling they're still working the bugs out of their new operation. The vu meter adjustment screw doesn't line up well with the hole in the faceplate and that's not cool for a 2K unit. I'd say a used 737 might be more reliable than a new one right now.

I also just got a UA 6176 and a Quartet II. The QII is AMAZING, but it isn't in the same price range, and the 6176 is cool but a totally different vibe and feature set. My partner keeps telling me not to return the 737 even though it's my least favorite because it's what people know. He's right to a point, plus it does have a pretty intense EQ if you want to really tweak heavily.

The Quartet I might be a cool alternative.

Radial X-amp.. record the D.I. then run it to the bass amp. BTW it's cool to EQ and comp the bass to taste before you send it back to the amp IMO.

If you're only going to rap and do vocals, definitely a great option would be the apogee Duet, It's a perfect combination of Pre + solid AD/DA. V. Nice.
Stick a great mic like a Neumann M149 or even a U87 and you'll be ready to go.

Yeah, I don`t want to start rumors but I`ve had that feeling for some time now that things are not well at Avalon. I did order some stock tubes & bulbs for my two units over the summer and got everything in a week but we`re not talking actual units.

When you consider that their website has remained the same for about 8 years, that they hardly advertise and their last product was released 10+ years ago, it just sounds like they have cut as many corners as possible to maximize their profits and/or slowly close the doors.

I would love to hear an Avalon rep respond but if I had to guess, they are probably down to 2-3 people running the company.

You don`t need any more gear, you need to re-write the chorus.

Unless Avalon lost its distribution deals with Sweetwater and Guitar Center, it ain't going anywhere...
