is there a plugin that shows me the highest peak of a track?

hey,

this might sound a bit weird but out of interest:

is there a plugin, programm or DAW function (reaper) that shows you the value of the highest peak of a track straightaway?

this could be useful when determining the optimum trim amount for your tracks if the were recorded too hot.

otherwise you'd have to play the track from beginning to end and then take a look at the meter to know the highest peak.

looking a the waveforms is not always reliable i find and not much faster.

does anybody have any ideas?

thanks

In ProTools if you use the audiosuite version of the gain plugin there is a "find level" button that gives you the peak reading of that region or regions. Try the Reaper equivalent of audiosuite gain.

Get Roger Nichol's INSPECTOR.

It's a free plug, but not sure if it's available for Reaper's plug format.
Inspector shows every peak, clip, and over, also stereo balance, and an RTA. Great metering too.
It lives on the end of my 2buss.

thanks, i downloaded it but it seems it's just like any old meter.
i need something that instantly shows me the value of the highest peak of the track without having to play it all the way trough.

thanks though.

Cant you just use the hold at highest peak function in your track meter's section? Does youre program have that?

Make sure you have the SWS extensions installed ... if you don't, you should

... then just select an item and run this action:

"Xenakios/SWS: Display item peak gains"

... voila ... instant peak sample value and rms of that item ...

... bind it to a keyboard shortcut or stick it in one of the menus and you're good to go ...

and unless it's something esoteric, always check the actions list before assuming that REAPER+SWS can't do something

man, SWS extensions is something!
i almost always look in the actions list for an SWS solution but i just didn't think of it this time. maybe because i thought of it as being a too complex procedure, at least more complex than most macros.

thanks

I don't have Reaper, but in Nuendo you can select a clip, go into the Audio menu and choose statistics. This will give you all of the clips vital stats such as peak sample, peak rms, and average rms. You can also do this in Wavelab with the global analysis function.
