The Steven Slate VCC Conundrum: iLok2 required for demo

So the new VCC is out and it's a weird demo:
  • To demo it, you must have an iLok2
  • If you do buy it, you get a free iLok2 this week
I don't have an iLok2. It's probably going to be 2-3 years before the iLok is replaced as a matter of course.

I know that this is a "One week only - free iLok2!" special that VCC is doing. I did buy it for that reason (well, not only that!).

I think it's just odd and obviously unfortunate that the demo has to be iLok2. I bet that slows adoption considerably.

yeah unfortunate.

I really wanted to try the demo...I still plan to buy the VCC but I still wanted to try it first.
I hope Steven and the team will make it possible to demo it with the Ilok.

I bought it without trying it :( I didn't want to but I figured that it's $50 cheaper to do so now. I believe that, now that iLok2 is here, all companies will be releasing new versions as iLok2-only. It's inevitable. If you are going to use iLok, you are locked into synchro'ing with iLok's release schedule. I figure that, at worst, I pay $250 for VCC and don't like it so I sell it for $200 and keep the iLok2 for the future.

Just say no. I do - there is no software I want enough to fool with copy protection.

A big +1.

I was given an iLok mark one recently and hate the crap I had to go through to get a "free" waves plug.

The whole iLok concept is SO intrusive but at the same time exclusive, I just want to pick up the phone and scream abuse at all the companies that regard this as a viable way of doing business.

And in the meantime, if I want to use iLok protected software, I have to use it.... *sigh*

Some would suggest you don't want the software enough. If you did, an iLok wouldn't be such a big deal.

Personally, I'm with you but somewhat neurotic about it. Something behind the meaning of it's very existence. Something about the world "dongle". I don't know. I don't like them..don't have any...don't want any. There are a few software packages I would buy in an instant...but show me a dongle and I do the virtual walkaway. The "i" in iLok is for "insulting". Guess I'm just too narrow-minded to get past that.

Nice this is, I'm doing just great without them.

I agree at the minute ilok2 only is a bit silly (uness they're getting a kickback!) - but in general, I have no problem with using an ilok...you plug it in, you synchronise it (1 time only), and bang. done. wheres the hassle?!!

yeah, I'd like to try this and I hope it's everything it's cracked (hah) up to be, but I won't buy it blind I'm afraid
