I really enjoy checking out the various threads where people put up music and thought it would be cool to check out the songs from all the people that just record it themselves. Bands, songwriters, rappers, whatever as long as you did it yourself (or at least the majority by yourself). Ok 3 rules.

1. You or a band member(s) did it yourself.

2. Tell in detail all of the recording chains you used! I never tire of reading how people get their sounds!

3. Post it as an mp3 or soundcloud file. Or any other way you like, but its so much easier to just scroll through and click play even though you deal with the mp3 loss.

Yeah, many of us have free tunes in our sigs. I have three albums of free material in mine. Granted, they sound much better as they progress, but you get what you pay for.

This is a almost final mix which is the climax of our next album. It's a concept album where we (the band, who are also scientists) get caught in a strange field caused by a particle collider and afterward reality shifts and we have crazy psychedelic adventures.

All ITB, Waves SSL Channel strips on everything, with tape effects from Ferox.

Real instruments, to include Moog. Bass was DI, guitar was a Les Paul thru a Vox VT50 that was cranked very loud and miced with a SM59. Only the Mellotron was a VSTi.

Drums were two little Blondie mics in a Glyn Johns setup, some cheapo Cad on the snare, and a AKG D112 on the bass drum. The snare mic went almost unused in the mix.



I wasn't there when the voice was recorded, but probly a MXL LDC.

I play guitar, drums, and mellotron. The Platypus sings and plays moog. Mr. Klaus plays bass.

I mixed.

i tracked mixed and mastered it, this song was a pita. and the rest are about like this mix wise.

the git is a tele thru a jcm 800 with a transformerless sm57 into a (probably) sytek pre.

the accordion is most likely a pair of at pro 37r's. into the sytek.
the bass is a GnL into a solid state randal head with a david eden cab (i miss that cab, not a lot of low end but it had some serious mids) with a heil pr30 near and a at4033 probably about 10 feet away. into the rnp. (no di)

the violin is an earthworks sro into the sytek.

the vox are a rode nt2a into the sytek.

the piano was a super pain in the ass. it's recorded in a church with my pro 37r's into the sytek. and i hated the sound (my fault, i almost never get to record a real piano so i was kinda winging it. i'm better since i swear). we re-did the pianos on the rest of the songs but we didn't bother on this one.
i'm actually running it thru waves gtr parallel style to add some much needed hi end to it.

the theremin was recorded direct, it's mostly noise and crashing sounds in the background. yea for bad jacks.

Here's the first track off of the album my band put out in November. Completely self-recorded and mixed. Mastered by TW Walsh (I asked him to push the level a bit, don't blame him! ha).

I'm copying and pasting this description from another thread I had just started in the "All About The Music" forum, sorry for the redundancy!

The basic setup for the drums on the entire record was this:

1968 Ludwig Kit + Rogers Snare - I forget what the brass was....
Overheads - Earthworks SR77 (cardioid) in XY
Kick - D112 through port hole / inside drum
Snare - SM57 on top / e609 bottom
Rack Tom - SM57 (barely used)
Floor Tom - MD421 (also, barely used)
Rooms - FatHeads

All of these went to a Soundcraft 400b and out to a Fostex G16S with no NR. I printed the levels pretty hot to tape as the desk and the deck were not in the best shape as were really noisy. The dolby just sounded weird - so I didn't use it.

We had enough technical issues after we did the drums to tape, that the rest was done digitally..

The rest of the instruments...

Bass:
Either a Gibson Grabber or a late 70s Ric into a 70s Bassman 100 and Sunn 2 x 15 cabinet. Almost always mic'd with a Beyer M88. No direct. Firestudio Project preamp / no outboard EQ.

Guitars:
Usually a Jazzmaster or Jaguar (occasionally a Casino or Ric) into varying vintage Fender amps. The ones that got the most use were a 68 Bandmaster and a 68 Super Reverb. Mic was almost always a FatHead, into an ART Tube MPA, into the Firestudio. No EQ.

Keyboards:
Most often a Wurlitzer 200a, occasionally some other things pop up, into a 70s Twin Reverb or the Bandmaster. Again, FatHead into Tube MPA, into the Firestudio. No EQ. Organ was a Hammond RT3 (same as B3, but with full pedals) usually recorded with an AT4050, again Tube MPA.

Vocals:
Matt's leads (tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) - Rode NTK into Soundcraft 400b, a bit of EQ at the board, slight compression from a FMR RNC, into the Firestudio.

My leads (tracks, 3, 5, 7, 9) - AT4050 into Tube MPA into Firestudio.

Mixing - a lot of Waves API EQ, UAD Pultec, Fatso, 1176, and LA2A. All in the box (Cubase).

fathead huh, if i was a betting man i would have lost that one. i usually avoid cheep ribbons like a disease but that sounds good for no eq.

Thanks. I should mention when I said "No EQ" in those posts above, I meant they weren't tracked with any EQ from the soundcraft, because somethings (drums / some vocals) were. There was a fair amount of ITB EQ on the guitars, but mostly just cutting the lows out - unless there was some radical tone shift we wanted... Sorry if that was misleading!

Reverbs - well I'd mentioned we rented an EMT 140 plate for a day. However, that was almost exclusively used for vocals, strings, and acoustic piano. If you're curious about guitar reverbs, those all came from the amps used (Super Reverb, Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb all had their spots) or a friends Space Echo (only rarely). The space echo was also used to provide slap delay on about 1/2 of the guitar parts.

EDIT: I feel like it's worth noting that I've never had an easier time recording guitars / keyboards through amps than with a stock FatHead through a Tube MPA. It's the closest I've ever got to the "sound in the room" with really no effort. FatHead, about a foot off of the grill, easy.

My band is working on our first ep right now. We are recording the drums at a local studio, but I am engineering-so that counts as self recorded, right? The rest we will record at our various home studios.

Cant wait to post some of it in here.

Guitar : Telecaster -> Crate VC30

Bass : Rickenbacker 4003, neck direct, bridge through bass POD

Keyboard : Roland Fantom X7

Vocals : Me through Sony c48

Mixed on a Mackie d8b, and if hearing that makes the mix worse for you, then it was mixed on an SSL 4k.

After playing many years as a drummer & back vocal singer in a emo rock band called DelsonDrive, 2 years ago, the band split and I was pretty bummed about it. I was at my studio reading on GearSlutz, already had a couple of glass of wine and I decided to spontaneously write and record a first song and start my own solo project on which I would sing and play all the instruments.

I started to write the song at about 9PM and around 11PM I was starting the recording. I drank about 2 RedBulls that night and I recorded everything until 3AM. I thought that it was already too late to go home and why not finish it! So, I drank another RedBull and started the editing, mixing and at 9h00AM the song was done, mixed and mastered! I never continued the project but I had a lot of fun doing that song!

For technical info: I used my DW kit with a Ludwig LM402 snare. The guitars used were Gibson Lespaul Studio and Fender Telecaster. I used my Peavy 6505+ with a Mesa Boogie 4x12 cabinet mic'ed with a Shure SM57 and a AKG414. The bass was a Ernie Ball MusicMan Stringray 5 with a SansAmp RBI and a DBX160X. Vocal mic was a Rode NT2000 and the preamp was my SPL TrackOne.
