If I remember correctly........
8 Track 1/4" format @ 7.5 ips, with DBX
8 Ch. Mixing console with the "Tascam" sound.
This machine is ok for demo's and song writting, no more than that.
New +/- $3,000, I would think used $600-800 (?).

Look for obvious signs of wear and tear. Test all the pots and sliders to make sure that they work properly (nice smooth operation, minimum noise). Also look at the heads, and if possible do a test recording (nothing too fancy. Try the old jangling keys and voice). Test all the transport functions to make sure they work as they should. If it's in good condition, and has been well looked after, you've got yourself an excellent little unit at an outstanding price.

Oh, and you can do more than just song-writing and demos with it.

that was my first multitracker ever
i had a lot of fun with it . the machine is o.k , like the others said nothing spectacular . if i can remember correctly i paid like 1500 U$$ for it .
but take care , especially the tape section needs to work properly , otherwise you cant work with this unit . adjusting tape machines or replacing heads is expensive . dont forget the tape costs as well . i bought a 16 track some time ago for imho a killer price , the machine was history 6 month later and the repair would be 3 times the price i paid for the whole machine .

hard decission , good luck

If you want to hear some impressive-sounding stuff recorded on a 388, check out East River Pipe's The Gasoline Age

I always have problems with anything that asks me to choose a program to open it with. Please repost as an image.

It very cool. I tracked some drums yester day. I gust used two mikes. One bass drum one overhead (need to get more mikes) Sounded all right excepted I fink I hade the gain on to high because snare and bass drum wear a little distorted. Toms sounded real good. Overall it did not have much high end. Do you think I need to get it degaussed?

A good set up wouldn't hurt. Did the vendor tell you what kind of tape he/she normally used?

No I got it locally from the http://www.***************/. I don't think the guy used it that much. It took him a bit to figure out how to use it. The music store (the local good one not guitar center) only had one kind quantegy grand master studio master audio tape 456. .

If you want to utilise the Load function you'd be better off using either 407 or 457 (both Quantegy). Studio Spares in the UK stocks both.

The Load function is Very useful

what is a reasonable second hand price for Tascam 388 , and what should i check before buying it?

€300?

That's about what I paid for mine (except I paid in £s and it was only 200. But that was over six years ago)

thanks for your reply Mark, so I should propose between 300-450€ max without shipping... ?

how difficult and how expencive is it to source out new tapes for it in Europe?

I am currently using Tascam 644 Midistudio and like it's sound very much ... wonder how much the sound and mixer EQ's on 644 differ from the Tascam 388 , of course they should differ but how far, anyone had/has a chance to use both ?

P.S. sorry don't want to start cassettes versus reel to reel debate here, just need right info before purchase decision

Now that Google has image searches, you might want to put the picture he sent you in there just to make sure it isn't the same as some online one.
