Best "2nd" mic for kick ??

What mic would you use for a 2nd mic on the kick ??? say 3-5 ft in front of the kick with a d112 or 421 inside ??

I've heard akg solid tube ( cheap ) or u47 ?

What's the word ?

A ribbon would be a good choice that far back. AEA R84 or Coles 4038 come to mind.

War

PS: Toolskid, where did you get that signature? Funny stuff...

Yamaha Subkick

I'm addicted.

All that clean low end is like a big crack rock and I'm Whitney Houston.

I can't record without one now.

I second the sub kick. Been getting awesome results with it. That plus a 121 is a great combo, despite the tricky placement issues. But then again, it all depends on the desired result.

I'm with Knox... on the U-195 I engage the "fat" switch at the same time as the "bass rolloff" switch. If the drum is tuned right it will crush ribs [even at 3-5 ft.!!].

Last weeks drumsession:
D112 in the kick
sub-kick almost touching the fronthead
U195 and R-121 as MS stereo rooms.

The D112 and U195 combined give all the dry kick sound I need. The U195 just gives this very satisfying, low room sound. The R-121 sides blended in a little for some stereo spread. No eq at all, sounded awsome...

Good luck,
Dirk
