awesome album!!! totally funky sounding. i'd even say that it sounds kinda crappy... BUT those songs are soo good that it HAS to be that way. super squashy, over compressed, too hot and odd all around. Have you heard the 4? disc re-issue?? How about Muswell Hillbilly's? that's one of my all time favorite sounding records. |

"Other People's Lives" is Ray Davies new album not yet released but I can't wait and he's touring too!! Kinks are the most underrated band from of their time. Lola and the Ape man come face to face with the village green society thumbsup Trust your gut! This is very good stuff and it will last, oh yeah... and it's because of the songwriting as much as the the sound (more than). I listen to versions of these songs from the 60s 70s 80s and 90s and they always sound great! Sure the original is always the best, but don't confound the two (recording and song writing). FB |

Seriously, though, the RCA Kinks stuff is great. I also dig Preservation I and II and (of course) Muswell Hillbillies. Kinks get a LOT of play at my house. I think "Waterloo Sunset" is one of the greatest songs ever. |

You know you've really come to love them when you like their later stuff as much as their early work -- they have a sound that transcends production. While nothing beats VGPS, Arthur, and Muswell Hillbillies, I think that, while spotty, Soap Opera is a beautiful, under-rated album with a painfully under-developed concept.

VGPS has had a bit of a revival in the UK in the last few years - I think it might have won a 'Q' award for best album of all time (or something). Tracks from it are being used on TV ads in the UK too. I think it's a fantastic album - It really reflects a quirky english, middle class sensibility in such a gentle way. I love it. si |

Village Green is in my top 5 fave albums and it definitely is a quirky, odd, sloppy, eccentric production. The original cd version sounds better to me than the Castle reissue. I really need to get this on vinyl. I just picked up the Kinks Kronikles on lp and was surprised how much better it sounds than the cds. The production choices and recording quality made much more sense to me after hearing it on vinyl. Bill |

don't know how i missed this thread, but anyway... yeah this album is one of the greats. i don't really think of it as having *crappy* sound, as mentioned earlier in the thread. i think it's kind of standard for the time (the beatles of course being the exception to the rule). sound-wise, it's on par with *tommy* (which i feel is kind of a ripoff of VGPS anyway) but far more interesting. and any album with that much great mellotron work gets the thumbsup in my books. anyone else notice how ray's singing on "picture book" kind of sounds like jeff tweedy? -J |

The 3-CD version of 'VGPS' is really good, the mono mix rules! Some great outtakes and B-sides too. I was hesitant at first because too many classic album get frigged up with bloated reissues but this one is actually great and enhances the original album without overshadowing it with sonic waste. Having said that my absolute fave Kinks album is 'Face to Face', done when 'conceptual sophistication' started creeping in but their basic 'punk' attitude was still there. I could never get into 'Muswell Hillbillies', as much as I've tried. I just don't think it's on the same level as 'Face to Face', 'Something Else' and 'VGPS' from a songwriting perspective. I recently bought 'Misfits' on SACD/CD and it's a really great, maybe lesser known album.

BTW, if you like VGPS, you should check out Preservation parts I and II. They're both kinda off kilter and kinda written like musicals but they're both cool. |

hmmm.... sorry, but as much as i love the kinks - no album ever beats sgt pepper. half of the songs on VGPS are masterpieces and the rest are good. on sgt pepper there are only masterpieces.

Let me put in a good word for "Something Else". Love Me Till The Sun Shines, Lazy Old Sun, Afternoon Tea and the great Waterloo Sunset. The Kinks are not usually mentioned when talking about the giants of the British invasion. I have no idea why that is. The belong in the same pantheon as The Beatles, Stones and Who. Ray Davies is one the great songwriters of all time.

Kinks = Best band ever Village Green kix but they made soooo many good albums. Something Else comes to mind, Kink Kontroversy as well...oh, no idea listing them all. They all rawk. Whenever I need to describe the Kinks and their sound, I end up calling it a mix between punk rock, nursery rhymes and weird humor. A lot of their tunes have a childish vibe to them for sure. Like Phenomenal Cat...stuff like that. They wrote many childish sounding songs. Not childish - childish SOUNDING. Anyone with me here? |

BTW, sounds like the Ray Davies tour is worth seeing. A buddy of mine caught the Toronto show last night, and said it was tremendous. Ray played like someone who really wanted to be on stage and he still has his voice live. Wish I was there. js |
