My "Go To" Vocal Chain Mic Pre...

...trying to decide on a mic pre that will add some vintage "flava" to my vocal chain...I already have a few nice "clean" pres (Amek 9098, Rane MS1-B and others) but I'm looking for an "oldschool" sound as a option...mics I use for vocals include Rode K2, SP T3, Mojave MA200, sE2200A, Shure SM7...the vintage "voiced" pres I read the best reviews for are as follows:

Great River MP 1NV
Chameleon Labs 7602
AMI-Tab Funkenwerks V78
Chandler Germanium

...please chime in if you have any experience with these or other pres that would fit the bill ($1000. price range)...much thanks!

All of these are wonderfull pres. Each with their own signature. Is price an issue as well?
If not I would also look into an Chandler ltd-1 or a new Neve 1073.

1073 would be great!
I think Chandler TG2 would be enough 'old school' for you. Also API; I don't see it in your list.

i like the sound of the Tab Funkenwerks V78 a lot.
the 7602 doesn't sound bad at all...and the GR, its a GR it sounds great.

budget wise they're all around the same price.. the v78 has a much thicker sound than the others

...I know that the others all share a heritage to the "Neve" sound...how does the V78 compare to the classic 1073 style pre (other than the "thicker" comment)?...

Chameleon = way cool sound for the dough and that EQ just kills too (not to mention it's a killer DI that accents the mids in a way that might lose out solo'd out but wins in the mix).

But don't forget the Phoenix DRS-1 which isn't too far out from that $1k range.

Start an API lunchbox. It will serve you well for the rest of your career.

Phoenix DRS-1 would be my first choice, though slightly over budget unless you go used.

OSA MP1-L + OSA Track Pack is in the budget too, then the next time you want to buy a preamp, you're dropping $450 to $700, instead of another grand.

I went the other day in the local Giutar Center store with idea to buy two of the 7602. In the rack there, they had one used AMEK 9098 too. I did ask the guy to compare them and he gave me a shure BETA 78 I think is the model (works on 48V) WOW what a difference!!! Amek was a class better than the 7602!!! IMO. No EQ on both, just the mic/pre itself, listening thry the mackie big knob and KRK 8. Amek was so much more in the face at the same level and was somehow complete, comparing to the 7602 which was like rolled of in the (very) low and high freq. EQ on 7602 works great though, but I ended up getting 9098 for $550!?!? EQ was not working in the store and the LOW mid Q pot was broken. EQ was just fine; the guys did not know how to install it, they've got out from pre section only, which I did not notice in the store, but comming home I realized that, and I was buying with hope to fix EQ and paying for just a mic/pre for now, it sounded so good! So I've got a great pre/EQ for $550, AMEK 9098, and I ordered the pot from AMEK usa for $50. Great deal thoough, but my point was, I would not recomend 7602.
My 2cents..
