Patch cables for guitar effects? Mic cable or guitar cable?

Hi all.

Just been making up patch cables for the effects loops in the back of my amp and I realised I am using guitar cable.

All patch cables in the studio rack are mic cable of course.

Can I make cables for stomp boxes out of mic cable?

Where does it change? As soon as the signal has come out of a stomp box, or the line level coming out of the effect loop in the amp?

Thanks,
Spigg

Unbalanced "guitar cable" (for the TS connections) is what you'll want.

I'm not talking about the connectors, I'm asking about the cable.

Guitar or mic?

Same difference.

Unbalanced cable (one inner conductor) is usually used for guitar.
Balanced cable (two inner conductors) is usually used for mics.

Call it whatever you want.

Doesn't matter where it "changes". Only matters if it's a balanced or unbalanced interconnect. The cable doesn't care if it's a mic, line, or instrument impedance.

If you are using mic cable, you are going to treat the hot and neutral leads as one lead anyway. You are essentially just making mic cable into guitar cable.

My understanding is guitar cable has a very heavy gauge center as opposed to the very thin hot cold in mic cable.

I assumed this was for the different impedance.

Anyway, I'll just use guitar cable.
